Rafa defeated Jiri Vesely today in Hamburg. I only got to see about 10 minutes of the match, so don’t really have a lot to say except: holding serve? Still a bit of an issue. And double faults? Oye.

I was able to see the entire match. Again, consistency is an issue. Some absolutely BRILLIANT shots, then followed by double faults. Otherwise, his serving accuracy was good but his first serve percentage (winning points) was not high enough. On the other hand, after Rafa double-faulted away his chance for an outright win in the second set, he looked very strong in the tie-break. So, overall an improvement from his first round match as he was able to close out in two. Although I felt Rafa was generally too defensive, it was a good match for him with lots of long rallies to help him find his rhythm. I think just the type of match he needs to continue to gain in confidence! Such a pleasure to see Rafa on clay — vamos!

Your comments appear to encourage Nadal but do not present the true picture of his struggle. The total points won by him was only 88 against 84 for Vesely. Unforced errors for Nadal are 33 which should be for an authority in clay with 14 Grand Slams. Nadal was good enough in breaking the serves of his opponents but with his poor serving, allows his opponents to break his serve even by ordinary club player. Rallies are good but his stamina to continue long matches is of late doubtful. With this form, I doubt his resrugence in 2015 is good.

Well, he was serving so bad, first serve 140km, second 130 km!!! this is really bad
==> if he wants to stay longer in the tournament, he has to serve a way better, if he keeps playing the level of yesterday, he will be beaten beaten by fognini for a 3rd time this year on clay, this if he will have the chance to move forward in this tournament!

Despite a straight sets win, Rafa was far from convincing, the second set was terrible. Rafa’s service games the worst I’ve seen them, 7 double faults, some at crucial moments. He had some beautiful forehand winners and a few nice BH winners too but those 30 winners were shadowed by some 33 unforced errors. He had so many breaks of serve that he should have won that second set 6:1. His inconsistency still bothers me and he’ll have to improve to win this tournament as his opponents will only get tougher.
