In the first men’s quarterfinal of the day, Rafa played #11 Grigor Dimitrov. For most of the match, the prettiest thing on the court was the men, not the tennis. Both men seemed to battle nerves and they traded breaks in each set. (Admittedly, I missed most of the second set, so the tennis might have improved then.) The important thing though? Rafa won 6-4, 6-3 despite that. He worked is way though and is headed to the semis.

You are right, Miri. It was not the prettiest tennis from either player. Rafa needs to cut down on his unforced errors. But he still looked very confident most of the time and was dictating play for most of the match and he did look better in the second set. I’m not happy about the time warning on break point – do umps just wait for that moment before they call it on Rafa? Of course, then when Dimitrov spectacularly broke his racket and delayed play, he slowed down the match more than a few seconds. Rafa took especially long to serve after that — as if he was daring the ump to call him for time. :) Rafa is lifting his level each match and is looking good!! Maybe the switch back to the old racket was just what he needed.

Free wi-fi is great! It should be mandatory at all airports. Have a great time in Rome cheering on our champ!
