In the 2nd round of the 2015 Madrid Open, Rafa played #54 Steve Johnson. From the little bit I was able to see, Rafa was playing pretty well – I saw some down-the-line forehands that made me smile. The best thing? No yips when serving for the first set (he broke to take the second). Rafa’s through: 6-4, 6-3.

Yes, Rafa played well. I think Paul Annacone gave him a “B” for the match. Great to see him serve out the first set and then get his second break of the second set to take it. He wasn’t tested much but it was a solid performance with his usual brilliant shots — a good first match!

Good overall stats. I also felt Rafa simply ‘looked’ more confident today. His hard work on the practice courts paid off. Let’s hope it continues.
