DC: Spain 2; Ukraine 0
The World Group play-off tie between Spain and Ukraine got underway today in Madrid. Verdasco/Dolgopolov was first on the bill. Verdasco dropped the first set and I started gnashing my teeth at the decsion to play him instead of Robredo (okay, I was gnashing before the match, but it got worse then). But he managed to raise his level while it was downhill for Dolgo. First point to Spain: 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
Rafa and Stakhovsky were up next. It was the first meeting between the two players. Rafa seemed intent on proving that jet lag ain’t got nothing on him, that he has no aversion to carbs, and that, well, he’s awesome. He stormed to a 6-0, 6-0 lead in record time. The score got a bit more respectable for Stakhovsky in the third set, but things never felt in doubt for Rafa. Second point to Spain: 6-0, 6-0, 6-4.
