Brasil Open: Rafa withdraws from doubles
Per reports onsite, Rafa has pulled out of the doubles in order to focus more on singles. Personally, given the complaints about the quality of the courts and the fact that two players rolled their ankles on them today, I’m thinking the less time he spends on them the better! (Although, I am really sad I didn’t get to see at least one Rafandian match.)

I think it is the condition of the courts + balls being used; + Nalby must be tired after 3 sets to win his match today. All said, the smart thing; minimize time on court.
Yep, all things adding up to “smarter not to play”
Sensible move, Rafa.
Oh! Bit of a shock, but whatever decision Rafa makes is fine by me.
Smart move as according to reports Rafa’s doctor’s have warned him about playing to much.Singles is most important but if the court surface is not good ill be glad when he is out of there..
I hope all is okay. I wonder if he even practiced yesterday, so it might also be to rest more. Guess we’ll see today in singles.
Hope he’s ok. Rather worried about the reports of knee pain. This come back may be rather slow. At least he’s listening to his body and being sensible. Hope the singles go well today!
I hope it’s just precaution. Perhaps he can’t risk too much play on a nasty surface when the knee has to take it slow. Or he has more pain than expected and needs to slow down. It is what it is and we can do nothing about it, only hope he’s fine.
Just feel he is not ok. Just hope it was a precaution, but his withdrawl from doubles, and his consistent statements that knee is not fine,it may hold tommorow or not, we have to see every day.. these are dreadful signs. I am so worried here, imagine its not even a GS, its not even any other surface, how much affect his knee will have when he will be running for 3 hours continously for weeks.
As Rafa mentioned rightly in his book, everyone plays with pain, not everyone is blessed like federer with a perfect body.. but having said that, shouldnt he think about his physio and medical team, I am sure they would be great, but even after 6 months if this is how he feels, then its a major concern, when we look at wha Djokovic’s team has done to his fitness in last few years, even the soccer players, tendinitis is so common in soccer, yet such a prolonged thing. I feel either nothing is left in those knees (call them delicate or done..) or more importantly the physio team’s efforts are not sufficient at least here.
Have to remember Rafa’s team has taken the MOST conservative approach to his knees thus far. There is still the nuclear option of surgery to correct the Hoffa’s as well as other issues. I still have faith that Rafa will be back to 100% at some point again, if not this year then next year after surgery. I think the approach might have been too conservative but I think it will work itself out in the end and allow Rafa to play until the end of 2016.
I am concerned that he still has pain and I think it can only force him to be too cautious in his play and if he cannot push to the max if needed how can he win slams?
I am very annoyed that court standards are low; to have pro sports men risking injury and loss of earnings is poor. The regulation of tournaments should be stricter. We had the joke of “blue clay” and people falling over as “an experiment”. Sorry but there should be no unnecessary risks taken with peoples health.
ily NADAL!!!!! wish u the best luck! u are amazing, i love u!!!!!!!
