DC Semifinal: Spain 3, USA 1
Although neither match was 100% straight forward (Ferrer dropped one set; Almagro was pushed the limit in five), Spain got off to a great start on Friday as both David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro won their matches. The doubles match was exciting and tightly contested. Marc! Lopez came into the tie with a calf injury and Granollers suffered one during the match – leading them sporting matching calf wraps. With Granollers movement hampered, Marc! stepped things up and played wonderful doubles tennis until the very last point. The match ended, quite sadly, on his double fault. So, heading into Sunday, the tie is at Spain 2; USA 1.
Update:
Ferrer wrapped things up today by defeating Isner in 4 sets. Spain is through to the final where it looks like they will play the Czech Republic (Berdych is up 2 sets over Berlocq as I type this). The final would be held in the Czech Republic since the last time the two teams met Spain hosted the tie.
Ferrer d. Querrey 4-6 6-2 6-2 6-4
Almagro d. Isner 6-4 4-6 6-4 3-6 7-5
Bryan/Bryan d. Granollers/Lopez 3-6 6-3 5-7 5-7
Ferrer d. Isner 6-7(3) 6-3 6-4 6-2
Almagro v. Querrey No played

Missing Rafa of course, but do love that Daveeed!
Yes David is great. Not the same without rafa there playing or spectating. All matches have been good so far.
Who do you think is going to win the tie?
Thanks for posting this, miri! Marc! is my favorite success story. Rafa said a couple of years ago that Marc! was really good, just needed to “believe in his game”. Maybe Rafa’s belief was contagious. :-) For the guy who said a few years back after he and Rafa won IW for the first time “I don’t play at this level” he’s done pretty darn well.
Congrats to Spain for the win! David played brilliantly today, Isner not so much. Delpo is injured and out of the tie so looks like it’ll be the Czechs in the final. Which team gets to play at home??
Many congrats to Spain – all the players have done really well to beat the USA. David is my No 2 after Rafa – like Rafa he puts everything on the line for his country. All the players deserve praise as they have played great as a team IMO. Marc Lopez and Granollers have also done well to take a set off the Bryans.
Vamos Espana.
Updated to include the final scores, links to reports on the last match and a link to the doubles highlights.
Thanks, as always, miri, for the thorough work. Boy, howdy, you didn’t waste any time!!
Many thanks for the highlights Miri wasn’t able to watch, the red and yellow boys go marching on. Do miss our Rafa though but Daveeed is just as scrumptious.
Love the fact that an Armada without Rafa still got to the final of Davis Cup. This proves what we already know, that there’s some serious depth in Men’s tennis in Spain. Would love to see Rafa in the final but also think it would be fantastic for Daveeed to lead this different band of brothers to another famous win, he so deserves it.
Congratulations to the Armada! Terrific effort from all 4 teammates! Admire Daveed’s determination and drive immensely and so happy for his 2 wins-
The M and M were real contenders against the Bryan bros.
Also really enjoy seeing Nicolas Almagro calming down and having some overdue success – His ebullience makes him a natural as a cheerleader!
I thought there was to be a special tribute to Juan Carlos Ferrero -did anyone see it? Excuse me for saying imho, in the absence of Rafa, JCF is seriously hot! Also I don’t understand why there is so little attention seemingly paid to his retirement announcement …a grand slam winner, davis cup star player, former # 1 in the world…Didn’t even hear any mentions let alone accolades from the players or coaches Rafa has an acknowledgement for JCF on FB of course.
