(Catching up on old stuff – a little bit at a time)

@genny_ss kindly translated this article: El médico de Rafa Nadal asegura que su lesión “es molesta, pero no importante” from mundodeportivo.com:

Angel Ruiz-Cotorro, doctor of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) and of Rafa Nadal, has said that the injury suffered by the player “is annoying and painful, but not important.”

Cotorro, doctor of the Majorcan since he was 14, explained that Hoffa’s Syndrome, the ailment Nadal’s suffering, is a “inflammation of fat tissue” behind the patellar tendon and is “part of the tendinitis” suffered by the Spaniard in the past.

“He’s doing well. Next week we will carry out some tests and if the result is positive we will continue with the same treatment,” said Cotorro. Rafa Nadal is following a rehabilitation process that focuses on “deflating” the swollen tissue of the knee. To do this, assured his doctor, they are “treating the tendon” by means of “fitness physiotherapy work, iontophoresis (electrodes), laser and deep thermotherapy”.

In Indian Wells, Nadal began to have problems with the tendinitis in his left leg, which forced him to retire in Miami semifinal against Andy Murray. “During the clay season all evolved well, but after finishing Roland Garros he again had trouble,” said Cotorro.

On the chance that the former number one of the world plays the Davis Cup semifinals against the United States from 14 to 16 September, the specialist said they “cannot set a deadline. It’s necessary to go day by day, see the reactions and wait for the evolution in the coming weeks.” Finally, Angel Ruiz-Cotorro said that such diseases “are not very common.”

Thanks so much Genny for translating this. Makes it so clear to us what the implications of this injury are and it’s nothing to spend sleepless nights over :) Especially coming directly from Dr. Cottoro himself. Muchas gracias.

So sad Rafa having to miss these tournaments, especially th U S, it just wont be the same for any of us, but he must focus on getting 100% fit so he can continue winning more slams, i for one will watch far less of the tennis whilst the Hunk is absent, i find it frustrating that Federer can only win more tiltes (slams) when Rafa is out of the aquation, last time he beat Rara was in the dark ages, whey back in 2007, so c,mon Rafa hurry back and put Fed back in his place

  6. Ch F says:

So let me get this straight: on top of the tendinitis, he suffers from this Hoffa syndrome? Or has it been the Hoffa syndrome all along?

    • Cristina says:

I understand it’s on top of it, though I don’t think right now the tendinitis is giving him much trouble.

    • Casual Observer says:

Hoffa’s was likely there all along as an underlying condition. Probably exacerbated by the congenital foot problem.

      • Ch F says:

Could that mean that the tendinitis would be less harmful for Rafa if Hoffa’s syndrome wasn’t there? Could it be that if this syndrome is cured the tendinitis will be more manageable, or is it just my wishful thinking?
