What a tight fight for the no.1 spot!

  2. JayDee50 says:

I believe there are rankings points attached to the Olympics, with the gold medallist receiving 750. As the defending gold medal champion, would Rafa lose 750 points if he was unsuccessful? I’m not sure how the points work for the Olympics, being that they are awarded only every 4 years. Can anybody clarify?

  3. Izzie says:

No, Rafa will not loose any points if he doesn’t defend his medal- those points already went away 3 years ago. Any points he wins at the Olympics this year will be added to his current ranking points.

  4. JayDee50 says:

Ah – thanks Izzie and Allyn Sims for clarifying that. Good to know that *if* Rafa takes part in the Olympics he can only gain points.

  5. Jummy says:

Thanks Miri for the up-date. I am so glad to know that Rafa isn’t defending much these couple of months. Such a relieve!
Rafa, this is your mini-relaxation time, enjoy! Time to see how Roger and especially Djoker slog it out. :)

    • Nils says:

Roger too has just 270 points but Im amazed at Andy’s points. Djoker and Andy will have to be on their toes. Rafa meanwhile can be relaxed (though I don’t think he can be relaxed while playing, can he? ).
We are all for Rafa getting back to no. 1 (Dunno if that’s possible). Best of luck and Vamos!!

  6. raulmad says:

Miri, I think Murray has to defend “only” 1010 point (Cincinnati – 1000 and Canada – 10).

The ATP race is verrrry close right now with three different slam winners. Feddy has 7,085 points, Djokovic 6,840 and Rafa 6,795. Then there a big gap (of about 3000 points) where Andy and David sit … the two of them have been going back and forth between 4th and 5th places. Andy ahead right now with 3800 points; David at 3,755.

    • Sharon/London says:

Fed will have a lot of points to defend from USO to Wimbleon next year and he won’t do it. He has played many smaller tourneys he wouldnt normally play to get the no 1 ranking so he will have to play these again and more to stay there. It ain’t gonna happen.

Nole and Rafa both had a less successful end of season last year so if they play well it will be all change again at the top.

I have to admit I thought Fed was delusional when he said he could get back to no 1 but I didn’t think of Novak and Rafa dipping in form. This has helped Fed for sure.

  8. Joel Cooley says:

Could someone give a bulleted, cliff-notes version of just how the ranking points system works? I’d be much obliged.

    • JK says:

you carry points you win in a tourney for 52 weeks.
for instance all points that players won during wimbledon 2011 will drop off now and they will pick up points for wimbledon 2012.

eg: Rafa won 2011 and 2012 French Open so he will be flat.

  9. kyukee says:

    let’s see…
to sum it up, Rafa has a big chance of going to #2 by july/august and novak to #3 am i right?

if that is the case, it’s like we’ve gone back to how it all started, amazing!
