- Photos: A Look Back at Wimbledon – an amazing collection of photos that tell the history of Wimbledon.
With the games at 17 all, Pancho Gonzales of America takes a breather and rests on his racket during his Centre Court battle with compatriot Charles Pasarell at Wimbledon on June 24, 1969. Pancho, a long-time Wimbledon favourite, lost the first two sets 22-24: 1-6, but the match is not finished.
Those scores! Holy schnitkies.
And now, it’s time for me to get a few hours sleep before Wimbledon starts!

Those last photos are simply amazing. Esp. the black and white ones. And of course, it’s always nice to see pics of Crissie and Jimmy, at the time enganged, pose as Wimbledon champions. Also, I find it strange that Rafa has about 5-6 pics in the collection (which are awesome, btw) while Roger has only one and that one shared with Rafa, when he’s been a champion there 6 times.
I think you must have linked to these pics last year, too, Miri, as they were originally published on the 24th of June 2011.
Wimbledon is refreshing in the sense that there’s no logos on the backdrops on court, in pressers etc. Too bad the presser vid didn’t include the penguin joke but Rafa was obviously cold ;P
Oh the memories of the “look back at Wimbledon”. Teddy Tingling dresses for the ladies (fabulous). I named my daughter after Kerry Melville an Australian, and in the 1980 Borg/McEnroe final my son hurt his foot and had to go to Casualty – did I take him – God no I wasn’t leaving that match. Thanks Miri x
PS his dad took him and he was ok.
As always Rafa’s humility, sincerity and integrity shine through in the prolonged press clip. Cannot recall ever anyone who expresses and embodies the best characteristics of sports the way Rafa does. I just keep falling in love with him all over again…
And then when he takes the court!!! Yesterday I watched his RG matches against Isotomin, Almagro and Ferrer – yes definitely the most exciting player on the planet! imho..
Your “humble” opinion is solid for me, Leslie. Couldn’t agree more.
I agree with you Leslie, well said.
I just love love love Rafa’s honesty. He has no ego whatsoever.
He is the most humble tennis player playing today. When he loses he is honest about his weaknesses and mistakes and he praises his opponents.
Along with Federer they are the greatest ambassadors for tennis.
I am so excited that Wimbledon has started, I hope Rafa gets off to a great start and I wish him all the luck in the world that he wins this prestigious tournament for a 3rd time.
I still think the Rafa vs Federer rivalry is the greatest tennis has ever seen and a few experts and former champions agree. Their styles and personalities are so different that they compliment each other and bring out the best in each other. I would pay good money to see a repeat of Wimbledon final 2008 or something close.
@Miri thanks for the great pictures, videos and articles you provide everyday.
