Rumor: Rafa and PokerStars?

There’s a rumor going around that Rafa has signed an endorsement deal with PokerStars for a considerable sum of money. Keep in mind, right now this is just a rumor. Here’s sites that are talking about it – one has pictures from a possible commercial shoot that took place on Barcelona on April 30th.

Thanks to genny_ss/SpanishRNFan for sending these in. When I told her that poker and Rafa seemed like an odd combo, she agreed but then pointed out that we’d both thought the same about Armani! So, who knows.

I would add that Rafa + PokerStars seems like an odd combo. But maybe it is really all about the $$$ and not anything else…

I don’t know…It’s hard for me to put Rafa and poker in the same sentence. I think of Rafa as having the opposite of a poker face. He’s normally pretty expressive.

  3. Louise says:

I really hope this is not true. Rafa has a lot of kids following his career and gambling does not send out a positive message to them.

    • Denizen says:

The Shakira video, Armani ads and videos, and Bacardi endorsements aren’t exactly directed at kids, are they?

Of course, all endorsement deals are done for the money, no matter who the individuals and sponsors are. It’s business, pure and simple.

The concept of Rafa promoting drinking or gambling through endorsements imo is not a good fit with his brand. And, yes, he’s doing it for the money but, it’s sending out a wrong message that it is acceptable to drink and gamble to kids. Perhaps, if this is true, he should be more selective with which products he lends his name and image to. Just saying.

Well, everything is possible in this life!He made several things that I don’t like and still bother me but what can we do? We just funs! As long as he plays great tennis…..

  5. Lyn says:

I think poker is one of the most popular cards games period. Besides its fun to play, whether you bet with money or candy, like we do. I like the idea of kids playing cards with real people rather than video games hey but to each his own.

Maybe this explains Toni’s “You cannot be serious” t-shirt?! I cannot imagine Rafa signing a deal that promotes gambling! Then again, I couldn’t imagine him signing a deal with an alcohol company. At least that promoted responsible drinking. Maybe this will be something similar, but still, I hope it’s just a false rumour. It’s not like he needs the money.

  7. nolanola says:

At first I thought that Rafa and poker did not fit because his face is so expressive–a “poker face” is a cliche because it is a necessity. Then I started thinking how competitive he is, how observant, and how he can adjust and change his game according to this opponent’s weaknesses. I await developments, and am very happy he will have more public exposure, picture opportunities for me, and money for him.
He is a long way from a simple island boy with a gift for sport, and I love watching his development.

    • rafanatica says:

I like your perspective. I enjoy watching his development too. I’d like to see him do more fashion but didn’t particularly like the Armani campaign. They tried to transform him, rather than use his natural beauty. Maybe he’d be better off with a more sporty company, kinda like a tennis version of Shaun White, who has his own clothing line.

  8. L says:

Exactly. I think people read too much into endorsements and their perceived meaning.
They’re about money, period. I think Rafa’s more than a great role model for kids by the way he carries himself on and off the court, his character and his work ethic. I for one am all for Rafa making as much money as possible while he still can:)

  9. CC says:

I have no problem as such with this, if Rafa’s really into playing poker. I have no idea if he is. If he’s not, I’d think it’s a bit weird to represent something like this. Poker is a great card game, I’ve played it many a times. Gambling can turn nasty and ruin lives for innocent people. Not so keen.

Ah, well… Guess he needs the money…

  10. Cristina says:

Poker is a very fun card game. No need to read more into it. Of course gambling can EVENTUALLY be harmful, but that’s up to each person, they’re the ones responsible for themselves.

    • louise says:

Exactly, both drinking and gambling can become destructive addictions and lead you down a road further than you want to go. The reason companies pay stars to endorse their product is to encourage fans and others to buy the product…….

Is it strip poker? … cause that’d be OK.
