RafaLint: February 20th
Site News:
In theory, I’ll be updating the software used to run this site tonight (after my tennis class). Keep your fingers crossed! I had a few problems when I did it on my development site…
Articles:
- Hacienda investiga a Rafael Nadal y le obliga a cambiar de domicilio fiscal – by José María Irujo (elpais.com). Rafa’s tax bill is paid in full. (mangle or a shorter English version) Thanks, genny_ss
- Una auditoría desvela que Nadal cobra un millón de TVE – from Eurosport. Everyone suddenly seems to be very interested in Rafa’s money. Weird. (mangle)
- ¿Qué se puede aprender de Nadal, Messi, Guardiola o incluso de Pepe? – by Leonor Cabrera. You can learn “usefulness of fear” from Rafa. (mangle)
- Nadal acudirá a la justicia por el entrenador Borrás – from as.com Looks like there will be some sort of settlement with the guy sueing Rafa for recognition of the serve changes for the 2010 US Open. (mangle) But am I reading this right? March 12th? In the middle of the Indian Wells tournament? Will he have to be there in person?
Rafa does social media:
- Rafa “rested” in his trailer during a KIA commercial shoot. Did he drive his Ferrari to the set? ;)
Sweet twitter exchange between TVE announcer Mary Escario and Rafa. First, he retweeted something from her:
Recuperandome de un susto, en el hospital pero amenazo con volver con la misma fuerza

@RafaelNadal Gracias amigo!! Tus lecciones de coraje son mi manual. Pronto estoy ahí para vivir momentos como este twitter.com/mariaescariotv…

mariaescariotve: Thanks friend! Your lessons of courage are my manual. Soon I’ll be there for moments like this

Hi Miri,
re: the article about the lawsuit says either Rafa or his lawyers have to be present.
Thanks! I assume it will be his lawyer then.
Miri, how are you liking your tennis lessons? I had thought about doing that but then figured I should have done it when I was 20!! I have been watching and following tennis for 30 years (not as closely as since Rafa came on the scene!) but never did play. Seems it would be fun and also great exercise.
Ha ha another woman bites the dust and is taking tennis lessons :) Oh Rafa, any idea how many women are taking tennis or Spanish lessons thanks to you?
I tried tennis before I was 20, now I’m almost 50. I suck as much now as I did then. Every week I set the record for most whiffed shots. (I have NO hand-to-eye coordination.)
Also, David J. Nadal tweeted that Rafa would be flying to Julio Iglesias’ Dominican Republic house this Sunday. I saw a packing slip for a bunch of tennis balls for delivery from Austria to Julio’s house “for Rafa Nadal”, so Rafa will apparently be continuing his preparations there.
Wonder why he’s going to Iglesias’ house when his own new mansion is apparently ready for him. The developers are going to have a special ceremony to advertise handing over the keys to Rafa. Guess this fancy new development has tennis courts. Not a bad place to practice for a couple of weeks.
denizen, where’d you see the packing slip? you have eyes everywhere!
Wow, that’s cool Rafa’s going to practice in the DR. It’s nice and hot there. He’s getting ready
for IW! Can’t wait!!!
Here’s the mailer someone, perhaps unwisely, decided to tweet. http://yfrog.com/ob93iozj
I was wondering why he was going so early since the ceremony for his new house is only 4th March but maybe since it’s the day before IW starts he wants to have settled in closer to California.
May I know who is David Nadal? a tennis blogger? a publicist?
He is a Mallorcan journalist.
ok thanks! :o)
Interesting info in that first article about Rafa’s taxes. So since his company was incorporated in 2005 or 2006, Rafa earned at least 56 million euros in promotional income. Wowzers. That’s in addition to his tennis prize winnings of tens of millions of dollars which he would have to declare as personal income I would assume. Rafa is a very rich 25 year old.
Just to clarify, I think that Rafa has worked very hard to earn that money and it’s wonderful that he has been very successful. His accountants and financial advisers would have been negligent if they hadn’t done all they could to arrange his finances in a way most beneficial to Rafa. Since that article stipulates that Rafa has always maintained his personal tax residence in the Balearic Islands, I’m sure he has paid many millions of euros in taxes to them.
Love the fragment about playing to find “the essence of the sport” in Cabrera’s article. I suppose it’s not an easy attitude to maintain in environments obsessed with winning.
It also reminds me of a certain person, no?
It feels a little uncomfortable to be reading about Rafa’s earnings especially about certain things which should be kept private. I don’t understand what’s so controversial about the TVE interviews with regards to Rafa. TVE wants those exclusive live interviews with Rafa after his matches before he talks to any other media outlet which benefits them so why shouldn’t he charge for it. It’s was a business agreement after all and his fee is what it is. Of course TVE could just have waited for his press conference like the rest of media.
If I’m understanding mangles, I think it’s been brought up because rtve is having some financial problems – so people are questioning a lot of their past expenses.
TVE is public national TV, so the million euros paid to Rafa was spent from taxpayers’ money. It is understandable people want to know what their money was spent on, especially when rtve has financial problems…
I agree. The main issue is TVEs reckless spending. They didn’t have to enter into a contract with Rafa especially if they couldn’t afford it.
This is very similar to Rafa’s deal with the Balearic Islands, where they agreed to pay him millions for the right to use his image to promote the islands. Then they couldn’t afford it, had a big case of buyer’s remorse, and it all fizzled out.
When you contract with a public entity, chances are that the terms will eventually be…public.
I’m with L. I wonder if Rafa is bothered by it, too.
Wow, in this age of twitter and instant communication on social media outlets, famous people have zero privacy. On this post alone we’ve learned about Rafa’s taxes and investments and who pays him what – and that twit pic of the shipping label has Julio Iglesias’s home address on it. Makes me very uncomfortable. I feel badly for these guys. I really do.
Totally agree. And why anyone would be interested in posting something like that for everyone to see is beyond me.
Oh my goodness. Look where Rafa’s going to be staying. Iglesias’ house is incredible!

I agree with some of you above, all these $ issues are too private!
In particular I have problems with the Eurosport article. I don’t see why it’s Rafa that should be having the “headache” not TVE? Does anyone research on the financial state of their clients and if it’s in a bad shape, decide to do it for free?
No, no one does it for free.
Lets hope in the coming weeks Rafa’s tennis will do the talking instead of his money. How ’bout some trophy biting? :)
L – I agree with you, Rafa business should be left alone as we do not know with is the truth… lots of gossip
His tennis is wonderful and that’s all that matters.
Vamos Rafa
Can’t wait to see Rafa back on court. All this money related stuff eg his taxes, interview payments & the USO serve settlement are becoming tiresome. Hope he & the team get it all sorted very soon cos Rafa needs to concentrate on his tennis. Expect he’s looking forward to his time in Dominican Republic.
I agree. The financial issues are so distracting, and probably blown out of proportion by the media.
Well it must be remembered there has been a world financial crisis, and it is still going. Lots of people and Institutions are getting scrutiny about their financial activities as a result. It looks like there was a small scandal involving local politicians and the 1 per cent Corporate tax rate which kicked off the investigations from the tax man. The turn over must be local to qualify it seems. World wide sponsorship cannot qualify in that case. Oh well. He still has a few bob left as they used to say.
God knows i wouldnt be that happy if my national TV channel pays money to sports star just only interwiews. He is going to give interwiews in the end anyway and everbody is going to watch it in the end.It is stupid to pay for it and yes people pays natinal tv money from their pocket.
i feel Rafas management team using his popularity and the big love towards him to its absulate limits as well.Public love can suddenly turns out to be public hate,we have many examples of that.
Yes, but some people like to attack famous stars for reasons of jealosy. Reading some comments on face book or else where about Ronaldo for example you get a sick feeling about mankind. Those people don’t have a Lamborghini and obviously are not too happy about it!
i totally agree that some people attack famous stars because of jealosy. On the other hand Rafa has too much business going with public stuff and people can question that is it really worth it ?Do we seriously need to pay this guy ? Whats the benefit of it ? Private sector can do what ever they want with their own money they can even pay you 100 million box and if they dont get the results they want thats their problem. We wouldnt read this if Rafa did have this kind of a deal with private Tv channel.
I don’t think Rafa’s management is exploiting people’s love for Rafa. This is a business agreement for exclusive interviews for the TV station. The terms have to be agreed by both parties.
It is quite a common practice for big stars to enter into such contracts with TV stations which want exclusive rights.
