AO: El Classico
Getting up at 2:30am for a tennis match the day before I have a big meeting at work? Only for Rafa and Roger – their history, their class and their excellent tennis. The match started with Federer on fire. He broke his first chance and rode that break until 7th game. They stayed on serve and Federer took the set in a tiebreak. Things then got scarier as Rafa was broken at love to start the 2nd. He broke right back and they stayed on serve until the 6th game. Another break sealed the set for Rafa: 6-2. There was another trade of breaks in the 3rd and it too ended up going to a tiebreak. Federer fought back (and Rafa got a bit nervy) from 1-6 down, but Rafa ended up serving it out: 7-6(5). They both held serve in the 4th until Rafa broke in a hard fought 9th game to give himself the opportunity to serve for the match. It was a tight final game, but Rafa held and wins: 6-7(5), 6-2, 7-6(5),6-4.

It wasn’t the greatest match these two have played … yet whenever they do it is always so tense and full of drama. !! Well done Rafa for coming out on top! Thanks miri for the write up … amazing what you can do at such an early hour. Impressed.
Rafa’s epitaph should read “Federer’s Kryptonite”! Federer was indeed playing like superman in previous matches (his demolition of Delpo comes to mind) and in much of his match with Rafa, but Rafa just refused to be defeated. He came up with mind-boggling shots that NO ONE else can make and drew on the confidence that he beat Federer in the vast majority of their previous GS encounters to get himself out of trouble when he needed to. This is indeed the Rafa of even years, so here’s to a repeat of 2008/2010 in 2012! Onwards and upwards champ.
A little something to tide us over until miri gets the links up:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/tennis/article-2092113/Austr alian-Open-2012-Rafael-Nadal-final-beats-Roger-Federer.html
Includes a cute pic of Roger’s twins watching him play as well as one proving Rafa isn’t the only one that struggles with the shirt change and of course some nice pics of Rafa.
eeep, that link came out weirdly. Apparently there is supposed to be a space, as in “Austr alian” (at least it worked for me) but that confused the forum software.
Thx for the link; it worked for me.
Just what I needed after a stressful week at work. So happy that Sunday morning I get to watch rafa in another final! Vamos Rafa!!
So, please tell me that Rafa did his on court interview shirtless now???
A promise is a promise, hey? ;)
If he did not he’s got something to make up so that will be a shirt- and shortless interview if he wins the final!
Rafa, enhorabuena! Muy bien hecho!
You simply make me happy.
what a match, felt like a final to me and had a headache after with the tension of it all. Rafa is getting back to his best for sure, glad to see the passion and motivation is back to. He is in another slam final,if he loses (hope not) he can be pleased with his AO performance. He will beat Nole this year more than once, im convinced of that and regain no1 ranking. Nole has all the pressure and looks like he is feeling it. Defending is much harder,to have to keep winning and not gain any points is mentally draining.
Nobody on tv or in the press picked Rafa to win or be in the final so good luck, go and win and show them all the king is back!
It was great watching him beat Fed again & was a fantastic match. I am extremely happy & ready for the final. I taped it & only watched the end this morning before going to work but it made my day. It was his fate w/the tennis gods looking down on him & oh yeah, also a lot of hard work & Rafa’s tennis smarts IMHO! Please get some R&R Senor Nadal, as you deserve it, of course :)
What can I Say? Just….amazing match. I’m glad that Rafa won.
Great effort from both players. For the first time after a very long time I was with colm as well. I knew Rafa was going to win this as soon as I saw he didn’t have a meltdown because of the loss of the first set. The positive aktitude is there, the passion is there, the shots are there. The serve worked great and the backhand too. Can’t say the return of serve was bad either ;-). Hope he can keep that up even against Djokovic. Hope he can focus on how he’s been playing these past two weeks and not on the finals he lost to him. Vamos!
Yay Rafa! I’m so glad he has reached the final and the curse of the AO quarterfinal injuries and the fireworks has been broken. I’m loving his body language and passion this tournament.
The nerd in me wants to know why his third finger on his right hand had either a bandage on it or was taped up? Was he dining in a Japanese restaurant again touching hot plates? Has he not learned? Or did he get a little too friendly with the manta at the Melbourne aquarium? Torn fingernail? Did he bite it down to nubbins watching a replay of himself against Berdych the other night? I’m so nosy. Vamos Rafa!!!
Yes was such good news today have had like 10 days from hell and ain’t gettin any better.
Cant understand some of the people thought it wasn’t a great match. I think the media and fans were looking at two different matches. I thought it was fabulous – both going for their shots even if it dis miss and some sublime winners both fed and rafa. I though tit was fantastico, Why do you think some of said differently? I watched it the first time when I was really stressed and now have watched the recording and think it was better than the first time
Woohooo!!!
So happy!! Rafa was en fuego! Woot! and vamosing on to the final :-))
Very, very glad about the result. Rafa played a very solid match, he even wouldn’t lose the first set but he couldn’t manage to stay calm at the end of the set I suppose. With Rafa’s attitude on the court I was pretty sure he was going to be the winner even when Fed was 3-0 up in the first. Watching Djokovic against Ferrer especially the second set with his breathing problems gives me the hope that Rafa can take the title…
In the parallel suggested by your title, Rafa would be Barcelona and Federer Real Madrid. Not sure he would like that.
I think one of the reasons he plays well against Roger is that he truly believes that RF is the best ever and losing against him is no shame.
He does not get nervous against Roger since he does not mind losing to the best ever. So that’s way he ends up playing freely and his best and ends beating him :)
Meanwhile when he plays the likes of Berdych and to some extent even Nole he feels like the game is his to lose and therefore more nervous.
When he plays Nole tomorrow he should play with the same attitude. Honestly accept that Nole is better and its his game to lose which will translate to be a better and non-nervous, aggressive and winning Rafa.
Vamos!
I haven’t had a good feeling in a long time (since Wimbledon when I was wrong) but I have a good feeling about this one!
After the Berdych match and now this one, suddenly I don’t have to justify to anyone why Rafa’s my favourite player! Everything is falling into place again. It is so good to see him playing with that special brand of intensity, passion, and most importantly joy, again. I am hopeful that the final curse will also be broken… VAMOS!
At last First set two Nadal and I hope he plays like the First Set
