Back to practice – after a break?

Sounds like Rafa’s foot was bothering him a bit and he had to take a break from training for awhile. At least, that’s what the mangle of this makes me think. Anyone got a better read on it? At any rate, seems that he’s now getting ready for the North American hard court season. Maybe a bit behind the schedule he wanted, but working hard.

Love Toni in a “You CANNOT be serious” shirt.

(Thanks for the heads up, Inés.)

This is what Toni says: “After what happened in Wimbly, where it had finally seemed not to be anything at all, but where now a small problem in his tendon has been found; seems like everything is going fine now. The timing is a bit tight since he leaves for Montreal on Thursday; we’ll see if the last 10 days that he has until the tournament help him to prepare well.”

This is what Rafa says: “I’ve started training not too long ago, after Wimbledon my foot still bothered me; I trust that in the next week when I leave for Montreal, I’ll be at a higher level of physical performance.”

Thanks for the translation. Back on July 20, right after Rafa said he’d just started practicing again, the Spanish journalist David Nadal (who did a documentary on Toni) commented that many practices would be closed to the public, and that Toni would let the media know if they could come to practice. I’d hoped that meant they were working on some specific technical and tactical improvements, but now I’m just wondering how much he’s practiced at all.

  2. L says:

He only started training last week Tuesday or Wednesday right? So if he had to stop it would only have been for a few days since in the vid Toni says he’s got 10 days left so that would mean he started training again on Monday.

I’m just glad that he’s had a good couple of weeks or more to fully rest, what’s most important is that he comes back mentally and physically rested. He’s got enough time to build momentum leading into the US Open.

  3. Annie says:

crap. these tendon flare ups are very difficult to manage (in my experience). Glad that he and toni aren’t too concerned but the fact is that rafa is going to be spending the next 6 weeks pounding his feet on hot pavement for hours and hours every day. How does one heal a sore tendon doing that?

So here we go into the HC swing. Wonder how many collisions Rafa will have with Nole along the way? Here we go…Vamos Cookiepants!

    • L says:

That’s the biggest worry. If he had stop cause he was still feeling discomfort after 2 weeks off who’s to say it won’t come up again once the real competition begins and can he give his all with that in the back of his mind? I just don’t wanna see him re-injure himself especially not during the US Open. Although I don’t see him going all out in Toronto and Cincinnati. Only time will tell.

Anyway, great to see sweaty Rafa again, I’ve missed that and
I’ll be sending lots of positive energy to Rafa’s foot;)

  4. eva says:

    I hope he isn’t getting “reflex sympathetic (neurovascular) syndrome” when the pain persists and recurs even though the original injury has healed. I’m worried ;{

  5. rafafan says:

Lets be totally honest. Everyone saw him at the beach (Miri and this isn’t paparazi!)- everyone saw him with the bandage on and that made me feel more than uncomfortable. Yeah everyone saying footie and all that but seen it all before. It’s a cover up and we all know it. I am so worried now. If he plays Montreal he may go out in a wimper and in cinnci he will kept slapped as it is the fastest court in all the hard courts and US open well lets pray – from what we all know now??

  6. BAshley says:

I wish he would skip Montreal and rest his foot. Cincinnati can be his tune-up for US Open. I don’t know the ATP rule very well but do they have to play all the Masters 1000 events?

    • old sharon says:

They do have to play all the 1000′s but they can get an exemption if they’re injured but make an appearance at the beginning of the tournament to confer with tournament medical staff plus do some promo for the tourney. It’s a long trip from Mallorca to Montreal so if he’s going to be there, I think he’ll play but maybe not all out.

  7. Keith says:

Its a worry this tendon problem, but that’s competitive sport unfortunately. Puts so much stress on the body. Its the hidden damage inside we don’t see. But I am sure it feels bad, and hard to manage. Keeping my fingers crossed.

  8. Bebe says:

What I keep wondering about is, did he ever go to Dr Sanchez for more of those knee treatments he said he needed??

  9. L says:

Some people have suggested Rafa’s put on weight. I have to say he doesn’t look as lean as he was last year. Am i imagining it?

  10. faeaki says:

Yeah I agree, he does look a little weightier!

  11. Bebe says:

Yeah, I can really only tell a slight weight gain on his face, which looks a bit fuller than a year ago.

  12. Keith says:

Maybe too many of those cookies? He ate them before they paid him to sell them.
