The draw for Rome is out. For his first match, Rafa will play the winner of the first round Bellucci/Qualifier match. The tennis gods continue to laugh at Verdasco for his “real tennis” comment by giving him Raonic in the first round.

Seeds in Rafa’s quarter: Youzhny, Fish and Ferrer. Oh, Daveeed. Seeds in the bottom half of the top quarter: Federer, Gasquet, Monfils and Berdych. Seeds in the top quarter of the bottom half: Melzer, Roddick, Troicki and Murray. Seeds in the bottom quarter of the bottom half: Soderling, Almagro, Wawrinka and Djokovic.

  1. Maria says:

Miri, I think Rafa will play the winner of Bellucci/qualifier match.

  2. LB says:

Whoa – Rafa’s quarter is scary. They’re all kind of scary – anyone on a great day can take their opponents. But still, yikes. FERRER?!!

  3. marcela says:

Rafa’s draw is brutal, but he said the same about Madrid, so anything can happen no?

  4. faeaki says:

Mmmm Bellucci in the first round??? he is confident at the mo.. well until he loses to Djokovic of course, I think he will be a step too far for him.

  5. atch2 says:

Rafa didn’t say a comment about ‘real tennis’ when playing Daveed right? because the tennis gods have got them playing all too often this year. And my nerves are stretched everytime.

Hope Fer can beat Milos. Even though I like the tall Canadian, Fer needs some confidence building.

And Llodra may get to play Rafa again.

    • Allyn Sims says:

Just the opposite. Rafa keeps saying how Ferrer deserves to win a Masters 1000. So, it may still reflect the warped sense of humor of the tennis gods.

  6. rafalove<3 says:

Belluci seems to be doing very well tonight!!! Excellent game against Nole!!

  7. Marilyn Wasserman says:

Fed in Rafa’s half again? *Takes deep breath and remembers that Rome is played on REAL clay.*

In Miami I kinda thought that playing Roger was so emotional for Rafa that he was a bit flat in the final, even though he beat Roger easily.

  8. Moothing says:

Bellucci got 1st set and one break from Nole ; 6:4 and 3:2
    He is real good one.
I am afriad that Rafa might meet him first in Madrid before Rome.

  9. Kamil says:

I think that this is probably the toughest draw i ever seen on clay court for Rafa.

  10. isusvolisjb says:

I must have missed Verdasco’s “real tennis” comment; what was it? Also, I see Stan in this draw…where’s he been lately? Aren’t these Master’s 1000 serious tournaments required? (Except Monte, of course, which is optional.)

    • Els says:

When Verdasco lost to Milos on fast hard court, he said: “For me that’s not a real match in tennis. I hope to play soon against him in clay court to show him what it is to play tennis, and play rallies, and run, and not [just] serve..”

  11. Ch F says:

First match against Bellucci? Sounds especially hard after the tennis I watched him play tonight against Djokovic.

  12. patzin says:

Bellucci came away from match vs Nole with an injury. Wonder if he will pull out of Rome.

  13. rafanatic says:

A silent prayer that Bellucci pulls out, otherwise our boy is in serious trouble and Djokovic has chance to take Number 1…(((sob)))(((sob)))

  14. miri says:

Remember when everyone was complaining about the horrible draw Rafa had? Seeds (besides himself) left in his half: #7 and #18

    • JK says:

Ditto… I had said the same thing when DelPo withdrew in Madrid when everyone was worried when the draw came out.
