Committed. – I love this editorial on the Forty Deuce site.
But Rafa’s tact, of blocking out the positive to remain in a neutral to negative state of mind, takes iron-strength character to pull off. Without that character, he’s just a Spanish Debbie Downer. He’s no different than any other headcasey Negative Nelly on the tour. With it, he’s a humble, fiery competitor who plays without a lick of entitlement. That’s fucking scary.
Nadal’s Fifth Symphony by Matt Cronin
Nadal ran faster than he did at any time in the tournament, chasing down one huge Soderling blast after another, frequently changing the direction of his shots, spotting his serve well and hammering both his forehand and backhand. Soderling tried time and time again to hit him off the court but it proved impossible, as Nadal managed to drive most of his groundstrokes high and deep, had an excellent read on the Swede’s second serve and played every big point as if it was his last, as he was never broken in the tournament.
Sigo siendo muy parecido al de antes – interview in elmundo.es (Google translation; thanks to Nana for letting me know about this.)
I never claimed that nobody would see me as anything but a warm person, a human being of flesh and bone. I’ve always been normal, I cry like everyone else, I have my doubts, fears and emotions, like everyone else.
Like everyone else…but more awesome
All the experiences and everything I lived for these years will help you lose shyness, but small was very shy. I had a hard time to greet a person who did not know. I could hardly talk. I felt out of place when I was in a place where he had people over, I felt strange.
This? I can totally relate to.

iB3 coverage of the post-match party:

I’m exhausted just thinking about playing a Slam final, doing those interviews one after another, going to a post-party, Disneyland, then hopping on a train to another country for … evening practice.
Hee to Marc! looking amused by all the hubbub.
OK, that last vid links to a bunch of depressing European politicians :(
The heck? How in the world did I manage to do that? Weird. It’s fixed.
“Q. – What did the Queen after the game?
A. – He congratulated me, as usual, and so did part of the King.”
So, the Queen of Spain is male? And which part of the King congratulated you, Rafa?
I can totally relate to the shyness thing as well, actually I think a lot of people can. It’s just really great to hear someone like Rafa say it.
And Rafa being scared in the car is funny.
The Disney thing, I have to say it again…sooo embarrassing.
The “Committed” editorial was awesome! So well written and really capturing the essence of what makes Rafa so truly special.
I can’t even imagine being able to go to my job, go do errands and go out to a party late the same night, I guess I’m a little old..lol. Anyway, I don’t pretend to know mallorquí but in the conversation he’s having with the two males, Rafa seems to be relating the mark a ball left near the line during the final match of course, and the chair umpire came in to check it and Rafa says there were two marks, and the one he pointed at was not the one in question, and when the referee said “it’s not that one” he just shrugs…”oh well I screwed up”. I guess it just goes to show you that he doesn’t dwell on mistakes he’s just made when he’s playing. It looks like everyone is relaxed having fun.
Rafa must be wanting to get some sleep. His eyes looks very tired in that CNN interview.
Papa Nadal seems to be enjoying the post match party. I think in the video I saw him pushing someone. :P.
Hey Miri,
I found these highlights of the match so feel free to post them:

Enjoy,

In the Disneyland one, signing autographs and moving through the crowds, I just love how he’s able to bypass the adults but he tries to touch or say hi to all the kids! So sweet!
Love that delusional madman!
How can Rafa’s mom look so classy & beautiful even in a two-second shot? And how does Rafa manage to look during the post-match party so serious and focused, as if there is still one more point that he needs to play?
Loved the forty deuce piece, how perfectly written about Rafa! what can I say, he never ceases to amaze me, but I guess thats why I love him so, what a sportsman, what a personality, I have just returned from Rafa land (Mallorca), and I watched the highlights in my Hotel room around midnight on Sunday, awsome, amazing, his serving was sublime, incredible to be their in Spain the birth place of Rafa and watch it too, I passed Manacor while I was their with my son and we stopped to see the tennis club de Manacor, such a humble place rather like Rafa himself, who would think that was where such a tennis great would be born, I guess that just goes to show what hard work and dedication, not to mention the motivation that is needed to be even close to what the Great Rafael Nadal has achieved! I am in awe of him.
Where is his girlfriend in all of this?
BTW,this is the best Nadal-fan site-with serious journalistic talent. Thank you so much for keeping it up!
Wherever she is, it’s really none of our business unless she chooses for it to be. (Sorry, I’m a bit of stickler about privacy.)
And thanks, but seriously, I’m just a copying/pasting/snide commenter – nothing journalistic about it. ;)
Rafael is totally checking out that reporter during the CNN piece especially at the end. LOL!
I found a really nice, long video of an interview from Tennis Channel’s French Open Tonight during the middle of the tournament. I don’t think it’s been posted (? – Sorry if it’s a duplicate.) Bill McAtee does a good job of trying to get some variation on the questions. Not much variation on the answers, though, but Rafa looks very relaxed and beautiful. It’s fun to watch interviews from before he won, having the knowledge that he did win. And I think he actually says “pressure” not “pression” – although from a cuteness standpoint, I’d rather he didn’t get it right.

here – when in doubt, put the video’s id number (in this case EYL_7xTSFE8) in the search box. Or try searing for “Tennis Channel”
