MC: Post-match interview for French TV

Around the 4 minute mark, Rafa’s being interviewed by a lady for French TV. When she’s translating, he raises his shirt to wipe tears from his eyes. This causes quite an emotional conflict for me. ;)

Cannot deal with the trembling voice. At all.

  2. Emma R says:

That’s a terrific clip – and it’s set me off again a bit. Uncle Toni trying to speak French is adorable. Never seen Rafa so emotional apart from that awful Wimbledon presser 2007. That’ll teach him to wear his shirts so tight, he could barely pull it up. Shut up Emma, you’re wittering.

I know he has to be opaque with the press, but I am so glad he could show his emotions and how much this meant to him with us.

    • Emma R says:

Sorry, I meant to say “share” how much this meant to him with us:) I am all over the place tonight.

    • Maru says:

what do you mean “That’ll teach him to wear his shirts so tight, he could barely pull it up.”???? I whole heartedly approve of super tight shirts! Actually I want Pico-like tight shirts xD

      • Emma R says:

Oh I totally agree. Loving the shirts. Either he has inflated up again a bit, or Nike have finally employed a designer who is capable of making the most of Rafa’s physique (which isn’t exactly rocket science).

I was trying to be lovingly sarky, but is probably came out a bit wrong due to the intense amounts of capering and gibbering I was doing last night.

        Still enchanted, just saner now.

  3. patzin says:

At that point, he was still reeling with emotions. Very sweet. He’s shirts are tighter this time around. Is he gaining weight or are they getting smaller?

  4. Ch F says:

Aha! Toni says thank you to the French journalists of Canal+ for the good things they said about Rafa and even names one journalist. I sense a conciliatory move there from tio Toni ;-) Then the French journalist in question said he thinks very highly of Rafa, his fair-play and the quality of his game.

    Ah, what a glorious day.

    • aRafaelite says:

If I’m not mistaken that journalist was actually the legendary french tennis player Guy Forget who won a fair few singles and an impressive number of doubles titles himself!

      • Ch F says:

        Yep, that was him.

      • Nana says:

I faintly remember that Guy Forget was known for not being very Rafa-friendly in his commentaries? If that’s the case, I hope he’s now convinced of Rafa’s greatness and quality.

        • Anhelo says:

Guy Forget doesn’t really like Rafa, he is a pro-Federer, but he is also captain of France Davis Cup Team

        • JC says:

Yeah, he once said that tennis is no place for construction-worker arms, referring to Rafa’s beautiful guns. Maybe he should have taken a look at Gael Monfils before opening his big mouth… but of course, he is French!

          • Emma R says:

Always thought that if ever a comment was based on pure envy, that was it.

Agree Toni was on the conciliation path, but it was quite amusing to see he pronouced Guy’s name wrong. Accidental, I am sure:)

      • Maya says:

Yea, I think he’s also the one who said tennis didn’t need muscle bound construction workers like Rafa (or something to that effect). It was a few years ago but comments like that have a tendency to linger. Glad to hear he’s become Rafa friendly.

One thing that always gets me is athletes over coming adversity and winning (especially when they are around my age)… therefore when I saw him crying I got tears in my eyes… I also feel like this might be a sign that not just everything for Rafa to turn around but gives me new hope for myself…

  6. aRafaelite says:

No emotional conflict for me today! I was hurting for Fernando yesterday, but today I can watch this and truly appreciate Rafa’s glory. I was worried after the matches he shouldn’t have lost in Indian Wells and Miami, but I’m not worried any more. Awesome performance this week. Wonderful clip. Downloading it now so I can savour it again!

  7. dk says:

I am of the opinion that Rafa is playing more winning shots (I mean better) than previous years. I have to also say that Verdasco was a class act in the trophy presentation, unlike Federer at the 2009 Australian Open trophy presentation, allowing Rafa to celebrate and also being humble about things.

  8. Amanda says:

Don’t tear up, Rafa.. Come to Mandy for kisses…

  9. Nada H T says:

OOOH .. first tournament ” On MY Surface ” ;p

i love it that Rafa thinks and says out loud that

Clay is HIS so there is this sense of belonging

    and possession.

I HOPE YOU WILL WIN ALL CLAY TOURNAMENTS AND MORE :)

Especially RG , Wimbledon and USO

  10. Isabelle says:

Even though I don’t speak any French this is my favorite post match coverage. The split screen showing his welling up of emotion as he lies on the clay and the tear drying with his shirt and the enthusiasm and admiration for Rafa of those commentating/interviewing is so evident, very very touching to me. AND Uncle Toni getting interviewed, it’s all here. I agree Verdasco was a “class act”. Whew, what a day and the season of the earth has just begun.

  11. loverafa4ever says:

luv this guy… jst luv this guy. Cannot find a guy like this in sports! Many many more victories for you Rafa! We are equally happy for what you achieved today!

  12. Nana says:

I just love this guy and wish nothing but happiness for him =D

  13. mary says:

I found it rather funny when both Nando & Rafa who are native spaniards spoke english to a french audience. Is it me or does this seem weird but wonderful at the same time?
And tio Toni’s accent is hilarious cause it sounds the same when he speaks german!! What a clever man!!

    • GB says:

I think that, if it’s not an English speaking country, Rafa generally speaks Spanish. For example, at last years MC: http://tinyurl.com/y7nszf3

So maybe it was a case of him following Fer’s lead here…Selfishly, I’m glad they went with English so that I could understand every single bit of the adorableness!

      • Madi says:

But I’m sure even if it was in Spanish, we would have understood. I mean its ‘thank you everybody’ and ‘thank you all the sponsors without you it would not be possible’, yeah I could have guessed ;o)

    • Maya says:

I thought about that to Mary and concluded that since they don’t speak French, English would reach a wider audience.

  14. leela317 says:

Awwwww! He is soooo cute in this clip! Thanks so much for posting it!!

  15. CC says:

Looks like the lady interviewer wants to get her white jacket dirty and give Rafa a big hug when he’s lovely and emotional. Who wouldn’t?!

Heh, Rafa’s t-shirt very conveniently stays up a bit after he’s wiped his face, showing a lickle of that yummy tummy. That totally cracked me up! :D

    • An says:

Yep, exactly…. Thanks Nike for the tight fitting shirts!

      • Emma R says:

I saw a clip of him getting emotional after the SF in the Olympics 08 when Rosanna (might be Rosa) from the Spanish media put her hand on his shoulder consolingly, and he moved away sharpish. Maybe the French woman learned from this…

Thought he did very well to carry on speaking English when he was so emotional, and not just the stock phrases either.

  16. cindy says:

sooo well deserved ! keep it up RAFA right up to the TOP

  17. Atch2 says:

I don’t understand much French but I understand ‘EEEZZ BACK!’

Rafa is such a gentleman that he would turn away to shake the sweat out of his hair instead of drenching the white jacket lady. LOL. But he’s such a tease to pull up his shirt to her twice and reveal his 6-pack.

Also great to see glimpses of his Papa, Sister and rest of the camp.

  18. Susanna728 says:

Miri thanks for posting this and I loved your initial comment. When you get right down to it, this clip epitomizes why Rafa is so devastatingly attractive – strong, talented, beautiful, hot, thoughtful, warm and sensitive all in one package. And it all comes together in this video. Love it.

  19. Fay says:

This has to be the most touching clip I have seen of Rafa, he is so passionate, strong and beautiful/handsome.. especially with wet eyes, how could anyone dislike Rafa! amazing how he shares his emotions with everyone here too, it doesn’t get any better and the tight fitting shirts are peeerfect! shaping his perfectly formed torso, well done to Nike… gosh I love this man..!
