Well Begun in Miami

Okay, I’ll be putting up the match posts while miri is in Miami. I’m sorry I’m so late with this, I haven’t been around tonight, and I fail at titles and photos. :) Rafa won his opening match in Miami over Taylor Dent, 6-4, 6-3. Rafa always seems to enjoy being in Miami even though he’s never taken this title..maybe this is his year! I missed the match, so I have nothing to say on how he played. Maybe someone has some thoughts?

    It was 6-4, 6-3.

  2. Nic says:

Because they didn’t show it on tv and all I could get from the match was miri’s few tweets (can you blame her, she was watchin rafa live!!), all I can say is doesn’t he look sunliscious?! Can’t wait to see more pics of him in all his yellow glory :) Vamos Rafa, so glad you seem to have taken this one really confidently. Miri said his play was solid today. Great start!!

    • yoni says:

So long to the waffle shorts, hello to yellow. The match was not broadcast here in the US. Just happy to see he in no longer wearing in ice cream cone for shorts.

      • yoni says:

I meant “an” ice cream cone. A good start for him. Djokovic is out so….match by match, no pressure.

  3. tiemyshoe says:

Thanks for the interim posting, kalliopeia!

Nice stat for Rafa: 100% on break points. He got broken once himself – not sure how. Hope he brings the lemony power against Nalby.

Crazy how nobody saw this match go down, but it’s even CRAZIER how nobody saw the match where Djokovic got beat by a Rochus. A ROCHUS, for Chrissakes. Aren’t they like 4 feet tall?

    • yoni says:

Yes! Rochus are small people. Could you imagine Rochus vs. Isner or another freaky tall person? From what I read, Djokovic was jeered off the court…he had a melt down. Just when I thought he had endeared himself…..Sounds like Rafa’s match was all business-like, no real fireworks.

      • tiemyshoe says:

Actually, I think the plural for Rochus is Rochi. :P

I don’t really like Djokovic, but it’s tough to hear about him being jeered. No player should get booed like that if they get beaten fair and square.

        • yoni says:

I am so tired and punchy. “Rochi” is hysterical. I cannot stop giggling at the image of a bunch of little people with tennis rackets. I have to go to sleep.

      • teejustice says:

I was at the Djokovic match. He did get booed off the court. He had 10 double faults and 62 UEs. Serving was terrible and Rochus played hard the whole match. The second set was the best for Nole but he had to scratch and claw to pull it out.

On the other hand, Rafa was pretty efficient at his match. Taylor Dent hit some nice shots and a few volleys, but Rafa was in control and looking scrumptous in that yellow.

        • yoni says:

62 UFE!! WTF happened to him? That is like an Ivanovic UFE count. I also read he was breathing very heavily between points and doubled over. Mr. Rochus ran him ragged.

So glad that Rafa got it done swiftly.

          • teejustice says:

Yes, Novak was a bit labored out there. Breathing really heavy, pacing about. Granted they played some long rallies that either ended with Novak getting passed, flying a forehand long, or netting a drop shot. I thing he expected Rochus to go away.

Dent was bringing the heat on many serves. He hit a few upwards of 140. The guy next to us kept saying wow whenever Rafa was able to get those back in play.

I think the Gypsy video has Rafa being a bit more of a ham. A bit after his match we saw fans waiting out by the car service for him. I was able to catch this heading back in to the stadium. I couldn’t tell if it was requested, but he actually removed his shirt before going to sign autographs. Not that I minded, but he was showered, dressed and getting into a car.

            • tiemyshoe says:

That’s hilarious about Rafa taking off his shirt to sign autographs. If Gypsy has made him more amenable to spontaneous and unnecessary shirt removal, then … God bless you, Shakira.

            • rebel naughty says:

Sometimes I think Noles has an asthma problem… he breathes so laboriously when it gets tough..either that or he isn’t as fit as he looks! I don’t know because the guy has an impressive arsenal of weapons to choose from…

              • mary says:

I was thinking asthma as well. When I saw him at the AO, he wasn’t well either. He had to go to the toilet. The trouble is if it is asthma, he is limited in what he can take. Also remember he had to pull out of the AO last year he had to pull out as he was exhausted. We all assumed it was from the heat.

              • gio says:

Nole has had surgery for sinus problems. He’s had trouble breathing through his nose since he was a kid. I don’t think it’s asthma.

He retired at AO cuz it measured 130 degrees F on court. He couldn’t breathe & consulted trainer because his team was concerned re:long-term damage due to dehydration. Sane people went into the shade, but there’s so much money invested w/tickets, advertisers, etc. Why the roof was not closed and the AC turned on is beyond comprehension. Andy Roddick, I recall, was running around, jumping up & down between games, almost to taunt Nole & act as the the heat did not bother him. Of course, later, when the roof was closed for Serena Williams, she said it was madness to play tennis outdoors in a heat wave of that magnitude. Some regular folks actually died from the heat in that part of Australia that week. It was wicked hot.

        • Atch2 says:

Thought Rafa would hve more trouble today bec i remembered that Dent was a big servg Aussie-American serve & volleyer.

        • Serene says:

Hi teejustice, so glad to hear you were at Rafa’s match.
All I mannaged to see was the scoreboard. Sorry to hear that Djokovic was jeered at. Hope our Rafa gets a lot of support and love from the crowd.

  4. mary says:

I have friends in England, Italy, Spain, here in Australia & the US. Nobody saw it live unless you were actually there at the match or paid for it on subscription. However, my friend in the States said she has got a paid sub. & even then she couldn’t get live feed. Nole lost as well. There are a number of top tennis players playing today & there was no fucking stream. How bloody ridiculous is that?
Just happy our man won his match & comfortably by the looks of it.
His attire is looking so much better. Lemon is becoming btw. Hope he had a little burning of the shorts night last week. I think in future he might want to try before wear. ;-)

  5. miri says:

Thanks for posting! It was indeed a pretty routine match. Rafa was having a bit of trouble reading Dent’s serve, but not too much. He looked to be moving well and confident – well, as much as you can tell those things from way up high in the stadium. And yes, he looked like a lovely lemon drop out there. :)

    • Denizen says:

Thanks for your Twitter updates, miri. Nice to get some depth that live scores just can’t provide. Speaking of tweets, you can have my peaceful suburban slumber, and I’ll relieve you from “Helloooooo Cleveland” – I’m altruistic like that.

Guess you know that Marc is playing with Bellucci tomorrow.

      • miri says:

Yes. Marc! is 3rd on court 8. Rafa is 3rd on Grandstand. I fear these two things will cancel each other out. Sorry, but Rafa wins. ;)

  6. Nana says:

Can’t imagine matches with Rafa and Djokovic in a master’s event are not broadcast in most parts of the world? I think I have them here in Hong Kong, though I didn’t wake up this morning for it cos’ it started at around 5am. Will watch it when the match is posted on video on-demand of my broadband TV.

From Miri’s tweets it looks like a solid match for Rafa. I can’t wait to see the lemon drop in action! Hope you guys will get to watch the next round, fingers crossed!

    • Nana says:

Ughhh… I guess I too have no luck in watching the match… my video on demand lists the match but if it’s available it should be there already…. feeling pissy and robbed >_<

  7. Madi says:

    The shoes were awesome too.

  8. Eliana says:

Love me some Rafa in yellow and blue! And also t-shirts instead of polos, he looks so young and vibrant. Thanks Kalliopeia for the update!

Like some of you guys, I think is crazy that a lot of seeded players were in action today and nobody saw the matches. Not even because USA players like Roddick, Blake, Querrey, were playing…tsk, tsk, tsk

    • teejustice says:

The cameras were covered up around the court. I did see some roaming camera guys during the Henin match, but none in the day session.

      • Eliana says:

That’s just sad :(. And sorry that you had to watch the Nole debacle. I REALLY like him and upsets me that he’s playing that bad. Maybe he’s having some personal problems that nobody knows?

        • mary says:

Its been mentioned above that maybe it is asthma!!!! That would be ashame if that is the case. Hope it is just a cold. however, on the up side Rafa if he wins this tourney will be be knocking at the door of Noles position & will knock Murray off his perch. Just wishful thinking really. Hope it comes a reallity. ;-)

          • Eliana says:

I haven’t done the calculations since I don’t know the system but, with Murray loss today and Rafa’s hopefully getting better day after day, Rafa could be #3 by the end of the SE Open!

    • jba says:

i find it kinda funny how rafa goes, “it’s always difficult against Dent” sorta like he faced him so many times before, lol. love the fact that he had a clean win today but totally pissed that there was no stream of it at all. i woke up early just to catch the match and found nothing, boo. glad for rafa and a little sad for novak. not really a novak fan but nobody deserves to get booed after a match. vamos rafa for the next round!

      • faeaki7 says:

Yeah I woke up early too! cannot believe so many matches weren’t broadcasted, its a masters for christsake! saw the live scores with Djokovic before Iwent to sleep and was shocked to see the score but thought hell no he’ll scrape through but now I have read the match report its a shocker! he was saying how he had fun in the states relaxing after his 4th round exit at Indian wells now this? its sad he got bood of the court but I suppose its a poor showing for a world no.2? they must have felt that they deserved better, still I just hate booing! poor Nole wtf has happened to him? Glad Rafa came through altough he allowed himself to get broken back during the match I hear,”tut tut Rafa not this again!” Cannot wait to see him in his yellow number, Nalby next *gulps*

  9. patzin says:

TennisTv (subsc) starts coverage on Saturday – middle of second round? A little strange, but it is what it is. Sorry to miss some of the matches esp Rafa. Glad he won. He plays doubles tomorrow (Sat).

    • aRafaelite says:

Sadly, they rarely show the early rounds of the tourneys. Annoying when you want to study the form of your favourite players (read into that what you will!) early on.

  10. Atch2 says:

Good start Rafa. Glad the teeth have calmed down & not interfering with his play.

Luv the looks & sound of lemon drop Rafa. I have a sore throat right now so wouldn’t mind Rafa meltg in my mouth.

  11. raki says:

I am not able to see the matches on TV, can someone please send me some information about the free streaming sites. I am missing the Rafa action! Someone please help!!!!

    • Rafafan says:

Normally atdhe.net is pretty good and covers (although nothing last night). It seems most tv and other channnels will cover from today onwards.

Rafa in lemon drop – he looks absolutely gorgeous. The best outfit yet – and I love colour co-ordination. Even the plaid yellow and white shorts are perfect and subtle and…. different so unique to Rafa which we will always remember. Vamos fashion hunk x

  12. CC says:

    Yaaay! Rafa won!

And Djokovic lost?! Heh. I wanted to stay up to watch Rafa’s match on live scores (we lead such exciting lives, don’t we?). I went to bed with laptop on the floor next to me, but when Novak won the second set tiebreaker I remember thinking “screw this”, rolling over and falling asleep. Just woke up after having had a nightmare that I went on here, saw pictures of Americans celebrating that Dent had won. Phew… Evil dream! :D

Hope you had a good time watching the game miri!

  13. faeaki7 says:

Don’t worry CC we are on a par, your evening events are reminiscent of mine, laptop on floor next to bed? yep, checking live scores? yep, evil dreams about Rafa losing? yep, then I wakes up at 5.45??? to see how Rafa does!!! “geez the guy has taken over my life!” I am totally hooked.
Great news last night checked my e-mails for 2nd timetoday and wow, I have be given tickets from the Queens ballot!!! centre court too! cannot wait! pleeeease stay healthy Rafa!!!

    • Nic says:

Wow congrats! Fingers crossed for a healthy Rafa all year long! And beyond :)
Haha it’s so funny to see that I’m not the only one who’s life is full of fitting in RafaTennis no matter the time, place or occassion! I too have dreams of how his matches turn out because it happens so often that I’m thinkin so much of an upcoming or previous match just before bedtime!

      • faeaki7 says:

Yeah well at least I can post my feelings on here out loud and not be considered some kind of a nut!!!

        • CC says:

If I’m not considered to be a nutter, then nobody is.

          What’s that…? Oh, I am. Oh, OK… :D

  14. An says:

Oh well don’t worry about your live girls……..
I had a rather busy week, organising the whole competition for our club and beside that organising the first outdoor club tournament and playing it… working….. And missed even the knowledge that Rafa was already playing his first match this night! Feeling soooooooo guilty for that now i woke up and saw this post, this never happened to me before.
Pffffffwwwww Rafa, thanks for winning it without me :) i promiss it won’t happen again!

Uhhh, you where saying “whot”? My life occasionly resolves a little bit to much around Rafa, Noooooooo………

    • CC says:

Pffft… An, say it like it is. You were too busy thinking about having *breakfast in bed* with Rafa in his Miami hotel room, that you totally forgot he’s there to play tennis. I know. ;)

      • An says:

Hah, got me! Am i that obvious???;)

        • CC says:

Takes one to know one, as they say. My thoughts have wandered in the direction of Rafa’s bed a few times this week, too! ;)

          • An says:

Are there days passing that youre toughts don’t?;)

            • mary says:

There isn’t a day that passes that I don’t get some form of Rafa fix. I’m so obsessed & unfortunately that would be the summation of my character when it comes to Rafa, I worry if I go out for the day I might miss something. God I need a life. I now have a netbook & I carry it around like it’s my bag, totally attached. lol
I have friends on fb that I fear are sick & tired of me constantly posting stuff on my wall. Well ‘tough’ I say, as Rafa ain’t going away, so neither am I!!! ;-)

  15. Nana says:

A short clip of the Dent match to quench the thirst.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSy3cRy5dk0

Can’t really see how the points are won cos’ the camera only shows Rafa all the way… But I’m sure most of us wouldn’t mind…

    • Atch2 says:

      Thanks for linking the vid.

The skidding of Rafa’s shoes are quite clear in the vid. Never noticed that before.

      • mary says:

I noticed he skidded quite a bit at the AO. He made mention that as the match continues his shoes get worn & they start to slip more. I wonder when he will start using a second pair of shoes during a match while playing the hard courts!!!!!

    • faeaki7 says:

Oh sankyou sankyou soo much, what a fix, I just love watching him move around the court when he volleys like that he brings so much passion!!! btw don’t you love the way Rafa always lets his opponent shake hands with the umpire first? a true sportsman/gentleman!

  16. Marilyn Wasserman says:

I am not a Nole fan, but it’s disgusting that he got booed. He does have breathing problems at times, asthma of some sort, but I thought he was over that. It wasn’t that hot/humid yesterday either. Well, not by South Fla standards.

    • mary says:

Asthma if that what it is, can come at any given time. It is a life long affliction with most asthmatics. Nole wouldn’t be able to take any cortisone products or steriods. So it would be very tough for him.

  17. Rafafan says:

Has anyone noticed – in the vid posted (thanks so much Nana – anymore welcome please), that Rafa’s shorts are er…. not so short anymore. In fact they are getting past his knees again – a sort of baggy pirate look again. Heah maybe his attire is coming back slowly.

And wow doesn’t he look on form those crushing forehands.

Keep it going. And keep that confidence going with Nalby coming your way. x

    • Eliana says:

Noticed that too, Rafafan. Really excited since I love Rafa’s capri pants, even though the ladies here will kill me for saying that. Although I don’t mind the thigh porn either :)

      • Emma R says:

The longer shorts seem to make his backside stand out even more in my opinion. Liking the yellow as well. The new shorts would make a lovely summer tablecloth, but they are a 100% improvement on the brown monstrosities.

Not looking forward to Nalbandian at all. Always have a bit of a nemesis feeling when he is around, even when Rafa is firing on all cylinders.

        • mary says:

I actually think his top is shorter & his shorts a little baggier. This just makes his butt look bigger & more bitable. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm *faints*

  18. Wendya says:

Am I the only one who hates this outfit? I just received some images from Zimbio…those yellow tablecloth shorts are awful…yuck!!! Sorry, don’t want to offend anyone, but this is the worst yet! Does anyone know how Nalby’s playing at the moment? Have seen his scores, but just wonder what his form is like at the moment.

  19. dutchgirl says:

I’m pissed they didn’t show this match anywhere! And it seems I’ll be missing the next one as well, because I will be at a concert :(

  20. Maya says:

Was Djokovich booed because he played poorly or because he had a melt down hissy fit on court. Isner was spanked by the crowd when he tossed his racket at his chair after losing a game to Rafa at IW. What I hate to see is a player working hard, keeping his cool and then getting booed anyway. And CC, you can rest well. I was told by a lady from Wisconsin who visited IW the last 4 years that Rafa IS the draw at Indian Wells and IS the only player to receive more applause than the Americans because he’s a class act. I’m pretty sure there’s got to be some carry over to Miami.

    • SallyO says:

“Was Djokovich booed because he played poorly or because he had a melt down hissy fit on court.”

Definitely. Other bloggers/tweeters who were there live said the same thing. I don’t blame them, I can’t stand mopey/dopey/someone ran over my cat/racket throwing attitudes. Meh.

      • Zooni says:

I have to agree. I didn’t see the match but there’s something a little distasteful about watching a player throw in the proverbial towel before a match has ended. If that’s indeed what happened here. Still, must be pretty disheartening times for Novak. :(

        • mary says:

I think everyone has off days & boy what an off day Nole & for matter Andy M had as well. I’m just happy Rafa made it through to the next round & he’s playing good.
You gotta remember that alot of tennis players are sensitive. They are playing for big bickies & put every waking hour almost into their profession. They sometimes get a little touchy & well it can be entertaining. My fav is Fernando Gonzalez. I would be so dissappointed if he didn’t misbehave a little. He cracks me up as well as his racquets. How many fans would have missed out on a souvenir if he didn’t crack his racquets then politely hand it to a happy fan.
I’m not a huge fan of Serena but that incident at the US open, love it or hate it generated heaps of interest & chatter. Tennis would otherwise be very boring if everyone were goodie two shoes.

  21. SallyO says:

Replace the “or” with an “and” and you’ve got the reason. It was the combination of BOTH things. A lot of tweets said that Djokovic didn’t look like he was even trying out there. Good win for “the hobbit” as the fantastic CNote from Forty Deuce calls him.

    • CC says:

Being short is hardly something you can help. Saying that somebody has an ugly shirt or a stupid haircut is fine, but taking the piss out of somebody because of something they can’t help is…kinda low.

  22. Isabelle says:

Haven’t done this so not sure I am doing it right…here is match point with Dent.

  23. EJL says:

keep ur spirits up Rafa.. and hate crowd being rude with any player no matter top-seeded or not and after a while the same crowd will be racing at laughing when nole starts joking around

  24. faeaki7 says:

Rafa just lost his doubles match 0-6 3-6 to the Bryans bros. To be expected I suppose, I wonder how Tomeu played? coz Rafa don’t usually go down that easy in doubles first round, strange, I am dead nervous about tommorows match with Nalby now… pleease hold your nerve Rafa!
