Match point, kids and a cat

Too much cuteness in this video!

Is he snacking on Quelys from his bag?

WTF is that finger gesture after match point, Rafa!? Me not likey those sort of things.

    *crosses arms*
*refuses to comment on Rafadorableness that follows*

    • Courtney says:

I think he was just gesturing for a towel to be brought to his bench or something, not doing the “#1” finger or anything like that.

    • Courtney says:

Also, Rafa totally commiserated with Bolelli about the footfault thing and Bols even got an extra pat on the back at the net. There’s no way Rafa was doing anything rude there! :)

    • Marla says:

I thought maybe it was to his box – come on guys, this took way too long and I got doubles in just a few. Who knows? but I did not think it rude – even it was a “bring ’em on!”. Actually – I hope that is the case because it means his confidence is back.

    • Debbie says:

Hee. I noticed that too. It looked like a “follow me” gesture. I am just going to pretend it was directed at me. :)

    • Missy says:

      {edited to remove attack on another member – everyone has a right to an opinion}

The vid was adorable, yet another cat on court (so funny!), Rafa playing with Tots cuteness overload and the cooookie munching is just sweetness overload.

Vamos RAFA! Gulluck in your match versus Potito Starace (love that name!). You played great today kiddo!

      • Missy says:

“{edited to remove attack on another member – everyone has a right to an opinion}”

Yes Miri, everyone does. So why did you edit my opinion? It was hardly an attack. But it’s good to see that CC retracted what she originally wrote. I think my observation was right on the money. Much like when someone says something about Sodemort, she has the right to defend his actions.I don’t recall seeing those edited.

        • miri says:

Yours was edited because it was leveled at and passed judgment on another commenter. Notice how the other posters managed to talk about the same thing without resorting to calling the person whose opinion they didn’t agree with names?

          • Missy says:

*frowns* I don’t recall calling CC names.
If I did, then sorry about that. I still think editing someone’s opinion bites (the rest of the post was mostly about Sodemort, it was not insulting her personally).

In any case, I’ve moved on now. Love Rafa in that orange!

        • CC says:

          I haven’t retracted what I originally wrote.
When I saw Rafa “click” with his finger, watching the match on telly, it made me think he gestured for people to take a pic. Kind of like, “look at me, I’m so brilliant”. Then during the highlights the commentators mentioned the same interpretation of that gesture. I didn’t like it. Hopefully myself and the commentators are wrong. Nothing more to it.

          • miri says:

It does look like a “picture” motion, but then again, it also looks like he might be spraying some Lanvin on himself. Maybe that’s how he’s working that sponsor in. ;)

(Obviously, I have no idea what the heck it means.)

I’m pretty sure that he’s not looking at “his team” when making the motion as other people have said. He’s not really looking at the stands at all when he does it. He’s looking straight ahead while walking towards the net.

It’s certainly a gesture I don’t remember him making before.

            • CC says:

I didn’t mean to make a biggy out of this, but I just immediately picked up on it when I saw it as being one of those stupid, manly, slightly arrogant gestures you get from footballers when scoring a goal. Just more subdued.

              • sunset says:

My honest thought is that this is indeed a bit of a self-congratulating, childish, ‘macho’ kind of gesture. Depending on who makes it, my tolerance level towards this type of display varies greatly. Knowing the sweet nature of our boy, I do not really have a problem with him doing this. After all, if one can put up with the fist-pumping, a gesture like this can be easily forgiven, I guess :)

              • mary says:

CC I downloaded the vid & I also noticed he did a quick nod of his head before the finger (looks like clicking motion). If you notice & forgive me as I haven’t been to Doha, you’ll see that the ground level section adjacent to the court is just for photographers. So yeah, I’d have to agree with the gesturing towards the photographers to take their snaps. It might be so commen place that he expects this & was just motioning for them to click away. Or we could all be off the mark. I’ll guarantee you someone will ask for a ‘please explain’………..!

                • k says:

First he nods, then makes the gesture, then a ballboy comes from the side he nodded & gestured and picks something from the court then goes back (at least it looks like that). So i still think he was saying something to the staff there, but i have no idea what…

                  • Atch2 says:

I’m obsessing about finding out what that gesture was about. Have rewinded repeated and it does look like he nod then gestures from the same side, maybe to the staff.
I need something else to distract me.

    • An says:

      Ah CC, dont be mad…
He said: “Anna time for you to come over here”

You do understand now, No? ;)

Serous, i don’t think he meant any harm……

      • CC says:

I didn’t think he meant any harm or was rude to anyone, just that…nevermind. I’ll stick with what you all say! :)

        • Ch F says:

Yeah really weird, no? Never seen him do it before. His look and expression while approaching the net were weird as well, can’t really define them.

          • Marla says:

Your comment made me watch again. I think Rafa was not happy with the foot fault call. He wants to win a fair contest. He frequently holds a #1finger up after a good win, maybe he felt like this was tarnished a little because of the call. I could sit here all night and guess, but the thing is he won, he was sweet to the fans and kids, and he was hot pink and bright orange – just like a beautiful sunset.

    • faeaki7 says:

Thats what I though CC so unRafalike, (the fingers I mean), have to say though is there anything nicer than Rafa in White, he looks gorgeously handsome playing with this kid!

    • mary says:

That gesture was for you to hurry & get over there quick. Well he needs a distraction between matches. ;-)

  2. sia says:

CC are you sure he wasn’t just beckoning for you?
    So so cute.

  3. patzin says:

So cute, the boy, the cat, the cookies!

  4. loverafa4ever says:

Even the cat cud not control itself seeing rafa’s cuteness. It had to run around him to show its happiness on seeing our “rafa adorable”! ;)

  5. Ch F says:

Awww!!! Lucky kid! I won’t be surprised if Rafa magically transferred some of his talent to the boy just by playing with him for some minutes. If this kid turns out to be a great tennis player, we’ll know why! This made my night, my day tomorrow and possibly my whole week ;-)

  6. djb says:

The only thing I can say to describe this video is “WOW”. Amazing, funny and hot!!

  7. Missy says:

OH! One other thing I wanted to point out, notice how Rafa winces and asks for another ball when the child misses his shots?

He didn’t want for the encounter to end with the child hitting an error and so he gave him another chance to “win”. So thoughtful! And how sweet was the teeny one trying to hug Rafa! <3

I was watching the Fed encounter after his match. It started off well enough with the child keeping up in the "rally". That is, until Fed decided to end the point by hitting a really high lob that the tot could not return. Poor little thing! He looked so disappointed and when he went up to the net he did not relate to Fed at all! I squealed incredulously: "C'mon Fed! Let the kid win! Look at his little face! He's about to cry!"

I love seeing the contrast between Rafa and Fed.

    • miri says:

One other thing I wanted to point out, notice how Rafa winces and asks for another ball when the child misses his shots?

And I think you can hear the commentators saying that the kid was getting more attempts than had been planned. I agree – it was totally sweet.

      • faeaki7 says:

Glad you mentioned that, he really does have a way with people and kids, so so sweet and how nice for the crowd!

    • Ch F says:

Thanks for bringing that up! I noticed it too but forgot to mention it cause there were just sooo many good things in that video I didn’t know where to start. Very sweet indeed!

  8. Cheryl says:

This video is fabulous, it’s exactly why we love Rafa!! The cat part was too funny. Thanks for posting it!

  9. Kathy says:

flove this video. All cuteness with the kiddies and also, after his match, when he jumbles around in his bag getting out a cookie and his jacket–then munching away later as he signs for the fans. And when he bends over to pick up his bag in his see through shorts…what a finale!

  10. NCRafa says:

Love the announcer’s comment when the woman kisses Rafa – “Well played, Lady!”

  11. miri says:

Are we going to have to wait at the end of each match for the putting on of the watch and the munching of some Quelys?

And am I a very, very bad person for wanting to title this post, “Pussies love Rafa”?

*off to go punish myself – with chocolate*

    • mary says:

Punish away!!!!! Took the words right out of my mouth. *Chokes* *Chokes again* ;-)

    • Eliana says:

The best thing would be that after Rafa puts on his watch and munches on some Quelys, he drives his Kia Sportage out of the stadiums with a Baleares banner in the back of the SUV-yeah I know, I went too far…

“And am I a very, very bad person for wanting to title this post, “Pussies love Rafa”?”
Hey Miri, what’s right is right…but with that kind of chocolaty punishment, I’m with you ;)

    • johanne says:

LMAO! Pussies DO love Rafa, so… ;)

    • CC says:

Why not “Rafa loves pussies…”? ;)

    • Ch F says:

That would make one hell of a title. Or one hell of a t-shirt ;-)

  12. Atch2 says:

I only saw a frozen feed of Rafa drinking at his bench and Bolleli at the net after the foot fault. Glad he took it better than Serena. Typical Rafa commiserating with him.

I think the beckoning finger gesture was aimed at someone in the crowd, maybe his posse. Sort of cheeky, like ‘I’m fired up, so bring it on’. Or maybe it was at Marc! To say ‘go get changed partner’. But he would never signal anything to say he better than anybody else. And he was doing the back patting and smiley winking at Bolleli, so I don’t think the gesture was directed at him.

Rafa’s so hot when he takes his shirt off right in front of the camera, and then Rafadorable with the tots and cookies. The rally was pretty long with the tot who looked pretty focussed, and Rafa seemed to ask for his name afterwards. And everyone wants a piece of Rafa. If it’s not a hug, it’s a kiss.

  13. patzin says:

Rafa is good with kids; they love him. So sweet, really. The cat ‘incident’ was funny.

  14. Rafafan says:

Rafa looks so cute in the vid espedially his smilys playing the tot. And the pussy cat – wondered where that came from last year – a good luck charm indeed.

The finger gesture – not sure what the heck that was – maybe someone could ask to explain.

Not sure if I like this – but Rafa seems to be doing too many promotional things in his matches on court afterwards and during court?

He was about to go off court and then probably said “shit – I nearly forgot. Gotta get those cookies out and stay in front of the camera so people can see, while I change my shirt, so everyone can see my bod and the cookies! to get good promo!” It makes me wonder now about his water bottles – turning them round in a specific way to the camera, making a big issue of them, and come to think of it touching his socks all the time (well he doesn’t do that much now but in his first few years it was alomost every minute particularly when about to serve!). It drove me nuts and added a few more seconds on to the serve. Don’t think these are tics/habits but hate to say it promotional stints which he will get paid for. The butt pulling def a tick – so as someone mentioned before a nike tick on the butt would be perfect promo!

I hope he can just concentrate on his tennis. The finger gesture may be the spraying of the Lavanin aftershave or whatever indeed! Promo overlaod if you ask me. Stick to the tennis Rafa – Vamos xxxxxx

    • MS says:

Hate to say this…. but i kinda agree with you, Rafafan. :(

Stick to the tennis, Rafa… Damn right!!!

    • Necitas says:

I’m having the same observations. Getting lots of promos nowadays. It can be very annoying lately. That’s why I also try to refrain from commenting every now and then, more so when a product is involve. But in this video, Rafa was really himself with the kids/tots. He can be very sweet and the smile is very contagious! Congrats for the win, Rafa! Keep it up!

  15. mary says:

“The butt pulling def a tick – so as someone mentioned before a nike tick on the butt would be perfect promo!”
That cracked me up Rafafan. Funniest thing I’ve read for awhile!!!! “Now remember Rafael, bend over & smile for the camara’s. Oh and while your there don’t forget to pick your butt, everyone will have to buy a bum picking pair then.”
Sorry Rafafan that was just one of those moments when you know it was too good an opportunity to miss out on commenting.
I know Rafa has stated somewhere his pants actually need pulling at. He continually gets wedges. It’s due to his well er, well rounded munchable butt!!!

    • Rafangel says:

Lol mary!! Actually I think Rafa, as a busy and successful man, shouldn’t have to spend so much time and effort to extract his panties from his famous ass. He needs to hire an assistant. I have applied for this position in the past – not heard back yet, but perhaps one day I shall. I’d be a natural, I’m quite convinced it’s my vocation.

I agree with Rafafan and Necitas insofar as Rafa does too much promo work and it’s not that appealing, but I think it’s not as bad as you think it is, Rafafan.

Seeing Rafa with those kids makes me want to provide him with a few myself.

      • mary says:

I think compared to many sports tennis does not pay alot. If money comes along via sponserships, promo’s, whatever, Rafa or any tennis player would be foolish not to take advantage of it. Remember their profesional tennis life is relatively short. So as annoying as it can be I say good on him!!

        • Atch2 says:

I agree with you. I understand the sponsorships and promos that he takes on. A pro tennis players career is not that long. We’d be lucky if Rafa was playing into his early 30s, unlike golfers who can play into their 30s and 40s and 50s. So good for him if he can accumulate some wealth while he’s playing well and healthy. Look at Fed, he’s sponsored by a watch, chocolate, private jet, coffee machine, sports brand, a bank, a shaver, a car etc…

I don’t think Rafa (especially Uncle Toni) would agree to it if the promo work interferred with his tennis. Most of it is done during breaks from tennis or after the match anyway.

          • Rafangel says:

I’m not saying no promo work, that’d be unrealistic. I do get a bit annoyed sometimes when he talks about how tired and homesick he is, and then spends half his time off travelling around doing commercial stuff (millionaires’ fair in Russia in Dec 08, anyone?!). Also, hasn’t he earnt around $25 in career winnings? Short career but not significantly below what a lot of us will earn in a lifetime ;)

            • Rafangel says:

Er, obviously, there should be a ‘million’ after the $25. Haven’t we all lost six zeros from time to time?

Obviously I’m not advocating dropping all advertising. I just think maybe he could stick to cookies and nudist beaches.

            • CC says:

I’ve never heard him say that he gets homesick or tired, really. Does he?

              • Rafangel says:

Loads. Don’t you recognise “ti-red”? He doesn’t use the word ‘homesick’, just talks about wanting to go back to Mallorca for a few days (remember Queen’s 08, lol).

    • aRafaelite says:

Ah, is that what it is? Great butt = pant control problems. Fantastic! That’ll explain why I was having the same problem on the tennis court on Monday… ;)

  16. Carol says:

Was the cat after the cookies??? It looked like a real street cat… :-))

Had to smile so much at Rafa playing with that little lad – the raquet was almost as big as him! And didn’t he think he’d got all the festivals rolled into one! Awww…

  17. Emma R says:

Oh the camera focussed in on the left arm during the shirt change! Oh the shaking of the hair with the droplets of the sweat flying out! Oh the bending over! Having watched this about 50 times last night, I just treated myself again.

Agree the Quellys were total product placement, but I can’t seem to mind too much cos it’s Rafa.

Re the hand gesture. The only thought I had was if it was toward the cameras/press was he trying to say come on, you guys keep on at me about form and my “terrible” 2009, get over it? He keeps getting questioned to death over this in interviews and it must be grating on him a bit, so I just wondered if that was it. Could very well be totally wrong.

  18. Rafafan says:

Glad you all agreed about the promos – and talking about Fed doing it, apart from the watch (he has it on on exhibition matches), he doesn’t literally put it on in front of the camera after every match. I forgot – that was another one of Rafa’s promos – standing right by the camera after every match – sort of flashing it around – -just like his gorgeous body which we don’t mind, but of course it was for the Nike jacket!

Maybe he should get the deodrant out next and spray it all over him, coz he is about the only one I have seen that more or less has a showe with his sweat on the court! Mayb he should be advertising the klein pants too – that are so tight (that Beckham wears) and Fili showed us a handful at the DC. Sorry folks but I am beginning to hate all this sucking up to the camera. Rafa feels uncomfortable and the first time I realised that Rafa realised he must do this or he must do that.

Anyway I like it when he is his natural self

    • Eliana says:

Hey Rafafan, I think you may be happier today since didn’t saw a red bag of cookies during today’s match, or maybe it was there and because of Rafa’s presence I ignored everything else!

    • Rafangel says:

Oh no! Hope you’re wrong about him flashing his body about to promote Nike – makes him sound like a prostitute (oh I am such a bad person for thinking that might have its pluses). I’m sure he’s not really doing that – too shy, for one thing. He doesn’t flash it about in shirt-changes in matches, either. Unfortunately.

  19. Isabelle says:

I love this video, all the Rafa cuteness. The gesture is odd but knowing what a person of integrity and good values Rafa is I assume there isn’t anything unkind in it. I guess the promo stuff comes with the long as the level of tennis sustains. What a doll he is with the kids!

  20. Alison says:

I just read some of the comments(I love this site btw)about the finger gesture and was very surprised with some of the reasons that were put forward to explain it.

When I saw it I immediately thought that Rafa was only pointing out that this was his first win of the new season to the crowd and was just congratulating himself that he was back on form. It would seem totally out of character for it to be anything else. He leaves the arrogant attitude for another top player to display. Guess who?

Loved the cat appearance again! Who said never work with children or animals? Rafa seems to be able to do both at once, of course!

  21. Rafafan says:

Alison – kids and animals – well said. He avoided the cat coz he didn’t want to interrupt th tot’s play! How amazing is that
