Or, as CC said when she emailed this to me: Now he has a taped leg as well *grumbles*

At first I was kinda thinking he was in the middle of a leg wax, but then I remembered that only Feliciano and Fernando get their legs done, so…I guess there’s another little niggle there. :(

Urm…does that tape actually DO anything, apart from worry us?

    • An says:

Must do something else then worry us, No?

And tio Toni isn’t helping on the worrying part either…
i think he’s more or less confessing that Rafa isn’t in such good shape at the moment…

Please, someone who understands better Spanish, translate for us!

      • CC says:

Hm…I’m not sure, but is he saying that Rafa isn’t PLAYING on great level at the moment, which we kinda knew? I hope he’s not saying that Rafa’s not great physically… I don’t know.

        • An says:

          God i hope youre right.
I always have problems to understand tio Toni when he speaks Spanish so i better not speculate, i realy am not sure enough… Need to go see BF’s grandpa to help me…

      • natch says:

Tio Toni sounds sexier than Uncle Toni.
Pretty much everything is sexier in Spanish, no? ;)

        • CC says:

Everything Spanish, in Spanish is sexier… Especially if it’s in Spain as well. Do I make any sense?

And An, could you go see grandpa pronto, por favor? ;)

          • An says:

            You make perfectly sense…

But… Lo sentimos, pero no es directamente posible….

Grandpa lives 200 miles away from here!

      • Ch F says:

Toni says Rafa is not at his best right now but that the overall level of play is not bad and that he could do well at the DC. The rest of the video more or less talks about the fact that they have been practising and even mentions that Rafa seems to have overcome his physical problems. But seriously, what is that tape all about??? Oh, and Toni doesn’t sound very optimistic indeed.

    • natch says:

The tape is designed to support. Hope that helps.
Maybe Rafa was just wearing it to decide whether or not to wax in the future? ;)

I also hope Rafa doesn’t pull out of DC and disappoint miri, no?

      • CC says:

Yeah, but I don’t understand how it can support? It’s just…tape.

Anyways, I’m sure he’s fine and won’t pull out of anything.

        • natch says:

It’s specially designed tape. I saw (and used) a bunch of it this summer. A trainer explained it to me ad nauseum. But, as with most things I don’t care to learn minutiae about, once I understood the basic concept, I tuned him out. :P

      • miri says:

I thought that kind of tape was actually about lifting the skin to relieve pressure. At least, that’s what I read here.

        • CC says:

          Hrm. I still don’t get it. Doesn’t matter. :)

          • An says:

Yeah Miri, i think its supposed to work that way…
I had my upper leg taped with this tape ( in bright pink ) this summer when i had a “broken” muscle in my tigh during playing tournaments evry week.

        • natch says:

          Support…lift…same thing, no?
At least, that’s what the brassiere makers tell us. ;)

          • miri says:

I suppose it could be. I tend to think of it as something tight – like when one has wobbly ankles and gets an ankle wrap.

  2. Kate says:

I love those yellow shoes – it is support tape my coach is using it on his wrist right now – Rafa looks OK – once he gets going the adrenaline will kick in pain or no pain!

  3. fatos says:

no it’s especially designed to relieve a muscular pain, and after a couples minutes it gets hotter, because there’s some kind of a resin that sticks to the skin and that’s why it gets hotter.
so on the whole it helps him to ease the pain on the joints, i’ve seen a picture of him wearing two bands of those on his lower back.
but we’ve got nothing to worry about, it’s more preventative, so chill out you boys and girls.

    • mary says:

Hi Fatos. When did you see the pic of his back taped? Was that recently, or from some time ago?

    • miri says:

I’ve only see that on Feli’s back, not Rafa’s.

    • Delta says:

Correcto Fatos, it’s to ward off muscle spasms while he works vs. lying on heat pad, so can practise @ same time. A warm @ comforting sensation minus anti-inflammatories, however usually use them in tandem, depends no?

  4. fatos says:

here is a good picture of him wearing the two black stripes on his lower back.
scroll down to the title la mejor silla del San Jord, you’ll see nadal from the back sat on a chair.
    goodbye, my friends.

  5. Susanna says:

A lot of times Toni sounds cautious intentionally – making opponents think Rafa isn’t 100%, to lull them into a false sense of security. I wouldn’t read too much into it.

  6. Denizen says:

I’m surprised how many people aren’t familiar with this tape – if you watched the summer Olympics or have seen Gonzo play tennis, you almost surely have seen it. (That said, Gonzo hasn’t worn it lately, perhaps to his chagrin since his knee gave out in Paris). In Olympic beach volleyball, Kerri Walsh wore such a strange arrangement of Kinesio tape she looked as if she had a giant spider glued to her shoulder. A couple of sites: http://www.kinesiotaping.com/olympic-watch.php http://howtoplaybeachvolleyball.com/kinesio-taping-and-beach-volleyball/

I’m not too concerned with the tape, unless the “overload” morphs into a “tear” like the abdominal muscle did.

    • miri says:

Oh, I’ve seen the tape in the most bizarre configurations in the most bizarre places. I always wondered what the heck good it could be doing in those weird configurations. Then I saw that one article I linked to earlier and it made more sense to me.

  7. Atch2 says:

The shoes are growing on me. The details look pretty cool. The tape though is not growing on me. Yeah, hope they r more preventive.

Didn’t Rafa have it on his abs when it broke? Sharapova had like an intricate shoulder one which I thought Nike might have designed for her to match her outfit. It’s a weird and wonderful invention. Sortof cool looking, like athletic tatooing, except I don’t like it on Rafa.

Not too hopeful on Nando bec not seeing him at the practises. Ferrero looks like he hasn’t gained a gram since that last DC victory in Barcelona.

    • CC says:

Yep, the shoes are definitely growing on me too! Nike, you’re forgiven for this time. ;)

      • Karen says:

Don’t worry about Nando have seen footage of him practising.Has Feli been spotted yet though?

        • Debbie says:

Yep. Feli is in this press conference video, next to Rafa. :) Yeah!

          • Atch2 says:

            Hi smilely Rafa :)

And what’s with the cap? Bad hair day Rafa?

Great to see the team together, but no Tommy. It must mean Ferrer and Ferrero are in good form then.

            Thanks for the link.

            • Debbie says:

You are welcome. I thought the same thing about the cap…bad hair day! He is very smiley though. I love me some smiley Rafa. :)))

  8. faeaki7 says:

I like the shoes, real snazzy for the event! I have seen this tape on many atheletes but didn’t know how it worked, so thanks for the info Fatos! Glad to hear that Nando is playing he did really well at the O2 even though he lost 2 tight matches! together they should make an awsome team!

  9. Sam says:

I noticed Rafa reaching down to touch his feet a few times in his match against Nole last week…is there a problem here? Hopefully nothing to serious, maybe just because it is so bloody cold and those muscles are a bit tight?
Also, am loving those ‘Equipo Espana’ shoes Rafa xxx

  10. Atch2 says:

LOL Rafa’s shoes made the news:

  11. faeaki7 says:

I asm nervous about this as Rafa seems to be in the worst form right now but just hoping that being in Barca, on the clay, with his team mates might just inspire him to find his game back…*prays for Spain*
