Toni says Rafa is not at his best right now but that the overall level of play is not bad and that he could do well at the DC. The rest of the video more or less talks about the fact that they have been practising and even mentions that Rafa seems to have overcome his physical problems. But seriously, what is that tape all about??? Oh, and Toni doesn’t sound very optimistic indeed.

It’s specially designed tape. I saw (and used) a bunch of it this summer. A trainer explained it to me ad nauseum. But, as with most things I don’t care to learn minutiae about, once I understood the basic concept, I tuned him out. :P
I thought that kind of tape was actually about lifting the skin to relieve pressure. At least, that’s what I read here.

I had my upper leg taped with this tape ( in bright pink ) this summer when i had a “broken” muscle in my tigh during playing tournaments evry week.
Support…lift…same thing, no?
At least, that’s what the brassiere makers tell us. ;)
I suppose it could be. I tend to think of it as something tight – like when one has wobbly ankles and gets an ankle wrap.
I love those yellow shoes – it is support tape my coach is using it on his wrist right now – Rafa looks OK – once he gets going the adrenaline will kick in pain or no pain!
no it’s especially designed to relieve a muscular pain, and after a couples minutes it gets hotter, because there’s some kind of a resin that sticks to the skin and that’s why it gets hotter.
so on the whole it helps him to ease the pain on the joints, i’ve seen a picture of him wearing two bands of those on his lower back.
but we’ve got nothing to worry about, it’s more preventative, so chill out you boys and girls.

I’ve only see that on Feli’s back, not Rafa’s.
Correcto Fatos, it’s to ward off muscle spasms while he works vs. lying on heat pad, so can practise @ same time. A warm @ comforting sensation minus anti-inflammatories, however usually use them in tandem, depends no?

A lot of times Toni sounds cautious intentionally – making opponents think Rafa isn’t 100%, to lull them into a false sense of security. I wouldn’t read too much into it.
I’m surprised how many people aren’t familiar with this tape – if you watched the summer Olympics or have seen Gonzo play tennis, you almost surely have seen it. (That said, Gonzo hasn’t worn it lately, perhaps to his chagrin since his knee gave out in Paris). In Olympic beach volleyball, Kerri Walsh wore such a strange arrangement of Kinesio tape she looked as if she had a giant spider glued to her shoulder. I’m not too concerned with the tape, unless the “overload” morphs into a “tear” like the abdominal muscle did.
Oh, I’ve seen the tape in the most bizarre configurations in the most bizarre places. I always wondered what the heck good it could be doing in those weird configurations. Then I saw that one article I linked to earlier and it made more sense to me.
The shoes are growing on me. The details look pretty cool. The tape though is not growing on me. Yeah, hope they r more preventive.
Didn’t Rafa have it on his abs when it broke? Sharapova had like an intricate shoulder one which I thought Nike might have designed for her to match her outfit. It’s a weird and wonderful invention. Sortof cool looking, like athletic tatooing, except I don’t like it on Rafa.
Not too hopeful on Nando bec not seeing him at the practises. Ferrero looks like he hasn’t gained a gram since that last DC victory in Barcelona.

I like the shoes, real snazzy for the event! I have seen this tape on many atheletes but didn’t know how it worked, so thanks for the info Fatos! Glad to hear that Nando is playing he did really well at the O2 even though he lost 2 tight matches! together they should make an awsome team!
I noticed Rafa reaching down to touch his feet a few times in his match against Nole last week…is there a problem here? Hopefully nothing to serious, maybe just because it is so bloody cold and those muscles are a bit tight?
