Rafa apologizes to a lady for hitting her with a ball, manages to lob over a freaky-tall guy, and smiles because he returns a killer serve with a two-handed forehand.

This is one of my most favourite clips. Rafa was enjoying his tennis and he was playing great.

That killer smile to go with that killer forehand.

I hope that pink lady thought that being comforted by Rafa was worth being hit with his ball. And the reflex reaction to approach and apologize to her was sweet.

Gosh, this is the very match where I really fell in love with Rafa. I remember watching this live, and although I knew who Rafa was, I hadn’t seen him this charming before.
The smile, the tight pants, the lady stroking her chest looking at Rafa like she’s begging him to hit her again…
Oh, and I remember ladies emailing the commentators with things about Rafa that they couldn’t even read out. Heh. ;)

Yep thats when he got me too. Oh I would’ve literally fainted had he smiled at me like that. Flov what the commentator said about the lady liking Rafa hitting her & then nearly getting her again. And how Rafa lobbing big ben. The whole commentary was cute

    The smile!

There is so much awesome in this video. The best part? Rafa’s two handed forehand and smile. The second best part? The commentator outwardly “fangirling”. Hee.

Yeah, I think the commentators did a great job making every single woman and man in the UK last year fall head over heels in love with Rafa. ;)

      • Debbie says:

Yah- I was already there but this probably brought a lot of fans to the Rafa train. :)

    Ah the charm….

This was one of my favorite Rafa tourny’s as well. I remember thinking how happy and relaxed he was all week and I wondered about that because the press kept commneting on how he came to Queen’s alone. No Toni, no Perez, just Rafa -kind of like the olympics – and I thought he seemed happier there too.

    • Debbie says:

You hit the nail on the head! He was so relaxed and seemed to enjoy playing tennis that week. I noticed that too. He is just so beautiful in that mode. *drifts off to Rafa dream land*

I think it was a total no pression tournament for him: not worth a lot of points; not expected to do well since it was grass; just won the French. The lack of pression showed.

I didn’t know that Maria, he was @ Queens alone? interesting, coz he really was relaxed there! I watched that match live and people were asking sue barker over and over to replay that shot! I have adored Rafa for years but last year I became obsessed! I also remember his interview after winning that match, he said playing Karlovic on grass was like being in goal! I haven’t seen many players that believe in themselves lobbing Karlovic, and I haven’t enjoyed anything so much as I did watching Rafael last season, the best tennis ever!!!

His team wasn’t there? I thought he was looking at his team during the “smile” shot.

      • Marla says:

I’m pretty sure I remeber all the press commenting on how he went there alone – I recalled telling my hubby how he seemed so relaxed – like a kid playing freely. I also thought he seemed the same way at Indian Wells, this year. I’m not trying to imply something, it just seems like Rafa is always more “smiley” when Uncle Toni stays home. I really respect Toni Nadal for what he has done, like I said, just an observation.

I am dying from all the “wait and see about the knees”. I have a big trip planned for Montreal and if Rafa is not there, and Fed is not there, I am going to be lost.

        • miri says:

Interesting. I’ll have to dig through the google archives!

And, while we are in no way an adequate substitute, you could hang out with kefuoe and myself in Montreal. :)

          • CC says:

I’ve got this game on dvd at home, I’m also pretty sure that Uncle Toni isn’t there. However, I think Marc! is there and that must be why Rafa’s so relaxed. If it was just the two of them, I can picture them walking around the Queens club getting up to all sorts of mischief, no? (:

          • Marla says:

I would love to meet you. I will keep in touch. We are travelling on the 8th and staying til the 17th.

          • johanne says:

Francisco Roig, Maymo and Marc! Lopez were there with him. I’m positive. Francisco is an alternative coach when Toni isn’t there.

            • Suzanne says:

Yeah, I have this saved on DVR and for sure those four were there but no Tio Toni…When the cat’s away…Rafi loves him dearly but admits that he’s pretty strict. Rafi and Feli are mischevious little boys in that screnario. No wonder the pression was off. Oh I wish he’d hit me with a ball and squeeze my hand afterwards to say sorry. On the other hand, Toni seems to be a comfort to him when the pression is on! I love ’em all! What a great team…

I’ve seen the smile before, i never saw the match, always wondered what that ” to good to be true” smile was for.

    Charming Rafa…. O, thats dangerous!

I completly understand why you fell in love with him seeing this. I did the first time i ever saw him play ( QF RG 2005 ) and after that a little bit more by evry match he played and i could watch, evry pic and evry vid of him i could lay my hands on and it still grows evry day!

  8. Delta says:

Just 2nd nature for Rafa to go over and apologize with no hesitation. Agree as well, those commentators were entertaining, always using “great choice of words” which added to the already “cuteness” displayed by Rafa, and yes that great clip where he is smiling while on court. (usually a rare occasion) until he gets the “V” & there’s the smile that makes all smile! Melt too……..
