Rafa had his swagger back today and Lopez wasn’t acting like he was in his second doubles final ever. Not even a cat running onto the court could stop them from winning the doubles championship 4-6 6-4 10-8.
Team Nestor/Zimonjic used their frighteningly good net and returning skills to break Lopez/Nadal right off the bat, but Lopez/Nadal eventually got their groove going and broke back in the 7th game. Both teams held to 4-5 when Zimonjic hit an amazing backhand to end a lively point, break and take the set. Lopez/Nadal broke early in the second set as they took their tennis up a notch and that was all they needed to claim the tightly contested 2nd set 6-4.
This left them deciding the match with a super tiebreak set. Nestor/Zimonjic got an early mini-break, but Lopez/Nadal broke back to get even at 6-6. They went ahead at 7-6 with an amazing point well played by both teammates. Lopez/Nadal won 5 consecutive points to take things to 8-6 when Nestor/Zimonjic got one of their mini-breaks back and went on to tie things 8-8. The net was nice to Lopez/Nadal as Lopez hit two net cords on the next point to take them to match point. Rafa served it out and they won on their first match point.
